I have a 30 DR brush cutter that, at full throttle it searches, but at lower rpms it runs smoothly. The new fuel filter is translucent and appears to be empty.

I have checked the output of the fuel pump, the fuel lines, etc. I even used my hand vac and pumped fuel from the tank. Filter was about 2/3 full, but once running, it went back to looking empty. I can't see how the engine is even running. There is a breather device on the fuel tank that has a ball bearing inside, but it does not act like a check valve in either direction. B&S parts manuals do not mention this part other than being attached to the fuel tank. The engine is a 20hp V-Twin 40S8770009G1-20.0HP PRO XL30. I think the full speed rpm variations may be due to not getting enough fuel. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

SOURCE: Ford F100 Fuel System

There are a couple things here. In the first place if you can pump fuel with the pump off the engine and pumped by hand doesn't mean that it will pump on the engine. See the stroke on the engine is very short, it only moves like 1/4 inch. So you could have a bad pump even though you are pumping by hand. The gas cap, will have no effect on this model. Yes the pick-up tube has a filter on the bottom of it, and it could be stopped up. You can remove this unit up through the top of the tank, got to wiggle it and turn it sideways, and if you can find a used one( New ones scarce and expensive) by going to used parts place, and look for 1967 - 1972, they are all alike. Lots a luck in fixing this great ole truck.

SOURCE: Diesel engine, grey market kubota, the turqouise

yes there is a low pressure pump and a high pressure(incjector pump) if your no getting fuel to engine check for low pressure pump to be working may also have air in system which is very hard to get out and a diesel wont run untill most or all air is gone

SOURCE: engine starving for fuel, fuel filter very low, almost empty

your fuel pump is diaghram actuated by pulses from crankcase pressure, if you look there is a small tube that runs from pump to valve cover, pull fuel line off carb and have some one crank it over to see if it's pumping. could be pump or blockage between tank and pump, if fuel flow seems good to carb, i would pull bowl off and check for dirt and also make sure anti run on valve, the thinghy that holds the bowl on to carb is opening properly, it should open and close when you turn key from off to run, beyond that it could be you have some water in your gas.

Sears riding lawnmower. Smooth idle but rough, loud and poor power when full throttle

Check fuel valve is fully open. Check that fuel flows freely from to the carburetor input fitting... just remove line at carb and it should be a full steady stream of fuel.

Check that the primer bulb functions.

Be sure the O ring between backside of carburetor and engine intake is in good condition and in place.

Check breather tube from crankcase to air filter base is not cracked or damaged. Check the gasket between carburetor and air filter base is in place and properly oriented.

2007 V8 diesel sport. Missing badly at idle (650 RPM) when cold, runs smoothly if revs raised to 1000 RPM. Does not appear to miss under full power, and will generally run smoothly at idle when warm.

most likely bad injector tips
have them serviced and raise the idle to 750 rpms as the lower idle speed may not be raising the combustion pressure temperature to ignite badly sprayed fuel ( diesel has to be atomized not squirted )

Trimmer won't prime to start

Look inside the tank. Some units have a stone inside that blocks the fuel line when it is tipped a certain way. Might be what's happening here.

What makes car die when under full throttle but idles and runs great at low rpms

The fuel pump is bad or going bad. It sounds like it can handle the fuel demand at idle or midrange, but cuts out at higher rpms. A new or aftermarket pump might be in order.

Smokey 2 cycle oil will cause the exhaust ports to carbon up and plug the spark arrestor.
Remove the muffler, use a pick to clean out the exhaust port on the engine, and the muffler inside opening, then clean the spark arrestor screen, to assure yourself you are correcting the problem start the machine up with the muffler off, it should run like a charm, if it goes back to running badly when you reattach the muffler it may be clogged on the inside.
