Since you got the bike as a gift I would go to a kawi dealer or online and get a full maintance manual as they are not expensive and come in very handy for many reasons.
Synthetic is best but also $$$$$$. Just buy your oil from dealer, mine holds a hair under 4 qts (i use 4 qts) with filter. drain plug is under motor assy (bottom)
Use 10w40 motor oil in the gear box. Don't use any synthetic oils, oil marked "EC", or oil with "special" additives. Stick with the major brands; Pennzoil, Quaker State, Mobil or Shell. If in a hot area like Texas or New Mexico go with 20w50. Definitely change the oil filter.
