It sound like its just the seal in the casing through which the drive shaft emerges.Straight forward job to replace. (Workshop manual for your bike can show you step by step)
depends on how much you took apart but this link gives a pretty good assembly instruction if you are just trying to get the rotor back between the pads just insert a flat blade screwdriver between the pads and slowly pry them apart being careful not to chip or gouge the pads http://www.kawasakipartshouse.net/pages/parts/viewbybrand/9/Kawasaki.aspx
