Sounds like the temperature gauge or temperature sensor is faulty and giving a wrong reading. Too high of an engine temperature will shut that engine down. Check the temperature with a temp gun if you can get one to see how hot it is before it shuts down. Aim it at the coolant line or the engine block. Or take the temperature sensor out and check it by putting it in a pot full of hot water with a temperature gauge and boil the water to see how high the temperature gets before the sensor closes or opens. Use an ohm meter across the sensor terminals to know when it's either opened or closed. Some of these are set up to operate in either open or close mode.

SOURCE: system creeps down even when tractor is operating.

There are 2 potential problems -
1. Leaking spool on the control valve - rebuild the vale.

2. Cylinder blow-by. Disassemble piston and replace the seals.

To test if its the cylinder - retract the cylinders all the way... remove the hoses on the blind end (non rod end) of each cylinder, and again pull the valve to the retract position.

If fluid continues to pour out of the cylinder - the piston seal is damaged, and the affected cylinder must be repaired.

To test if the valve spool is faulty - disconnect the a and b ports just after the valve. Turn on the system and check for seepage from the disconnected lines (without moving the lever).

SOURCE: have a john deere lawn tractor. Blade will not

Check both belts on deck. Check if the clutch is clicking in. If not it will most likely need a new pto switch.

I have a 2000 John Deere 990. The fuel gauge and temp gauge only work part time but always together.Any ideas?

I have owned a 990 since new. 2001. The fuel gauge started to act similar to what you described for a few years. Recently the temp gauge was also doing the same thing. I finally decided to chase the problem. Bought a PDF file of John Deere manual. The fuel and temp gauges share a common ground. I tool the hood and panels off that allow getting behind the instrument panel. ps, you don't need to pull the steering wheel. NOTE, disconnect the battery before you dive into it. I disconnected and cleaned ALL of the plug connectors with spray contact cleaner. Put it back together. The fuel gauge comes to life instantly. The temp is slow, but that looked normal, and worked. Then today the temp stopped working mid way thru an hour of using the tractor. After a palm slap to the side of the instrument panel the temp gauge instantly came to life. So there is also a issue with the gauge itself. I am going to assume that the gauge needle is stuck. so maybe some cleaner and lube in the gauge itself will solve the second half of the problem.

How do I change the temp gauge on a john deere 6400

The temperature gauge is built into the instrument cluster and it needs to be changed as a unit.Try removing the wire from the temperature sensor and ground it to the frame of the tractor to verify that you do need the instrument cluster replaced, ground that wire will drive the gauge to hot if the gauge is good and nothing will change if it is defective. If grounding the wire made it work then you need a temperature sensor.Good luck and let me know how you make out!

If it has a clutch, that would be the problem. An electric clutch will kick on and off when it is hot if it is bad.
