97 ZX6R dies in neutral My ZX6R has trouble starting, unless I hold down the throttle. It will run ok as long as I'm on the gas, but it will idle very low, accelerate slowly, and shut off in neutral. Any help?
I just bought a new battery, I followed the instructions for adding the acid and charging it. The battery seems to operate fine.
I just bought the bike about a week ago, I think its an air/fuel problem, or I need to clean my carbs. The bike feels bogged down, and it sputters sometimes.I just bought a new battery, I followed the instructions for adding the acid and charging it. The battery seems to operate fine.

Not yet, I'm getting some carb cleaner tomorrow and then I'm going to take a look at it, and most likely clean my carbs while I'm at it.Not yet, I'm getting some carb cleaner tomorrow and then I'm going to take a look at it, and most likely clean my carbs while I'm at it.

Sounds like the shims need adjusting. Get it on a dyno to check the hydro-carbon emmisions if they are too high the problem is some of the valve clearances are too tight. A re-shim will cure the problem
Sounds like you may be right. Have you made sure the air cleaner is not clogged?Sounds like you may be right. Have you made sure the air cleaner is not clogged?

it appears you have electronic throttle control. any applicable trouble codes, relating to that system? clean the throttle bore and around throttle plate, don't force the throttle plate. your idle air is electronically controlled.
Have you checked the fuel pump for any blockage? The car isnt getting any gas unless u manually pump it by pressing the pedal.. So start there Sometimes when a engine requires excessive revving and throttle to stay afloat its a fuel supply problem. A clogged filter for example can be overcome with excessive throttle that drives the fuel pressure up enough to force it through, but it will barely trickle at idle and stall.
Usually the dead give away for fuel pump is when someone complains they have to floor it as soon as it turns over or it will die right away.
You either have a defective idle speed control valve or you have a huge vacuum leak on the engine like an intake manifold or warped throttle valve or throttle bore opening around the throttle valve, I have seen both...

Unless the vac leak is very large, it would not keep the engine from idling. The computer controls idle speed by regulating how much air enters the intake thru the throttle body by use of the idle air control valve. The throttle body could be gummed up, or the idle control valve may be faulty.
As far as I know the only thing you are doing by holding the gas pedal down is bypassing the idle air control valve. The computer controls idle speed by that valve. Most times the valve is faulty or there is dirt in the throttle body that blocks air flow to the valve. If the check engine light comes on there should be a trouble code for the valve or the problem.
It's most likely a combination of the 3 but the main cause would normally be the TPS (Throttle Positioning Sensor) which regulates engine idle speeds under different conditions.
Check your Idle Air Control valve assemble on the throttle body. Either its clogged shut with crud and a clean clean with carb choke cleaner spray and a cloth will fix it, or the electric drive in it is either at fault or there is a broken connection.
sounds like your engine is on its last leg. have you checked you push rods the could be bent usually due to over heating or a rocker arm is bad and valves sticking, or timing is wrong

Me too, thanks man.
