SOURCE: revs drop coming to standstill

Here is the cause of surges, stalls at stops, slow idle speed, erratic idle speed, rough idle and engine hesitation (and other problems), it is in most cases the idle speed control air-bypass valve and or throttle valve and upper intake, these area's get full of gunk and combustion residue over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.

SOURCE: my ford focus zetec 1.8 keeps over revving when

Hi I an Vortash there are a few things that can cause this ... Air at the inlet manifold caused by a faulty gasket ?.... Air leak in the Brake servo causing loss of Inlet vacum ( this would be noticeable with the fact that brakes would be a little spongy but not always and sometimes the engine revs increase when you put the brakes on when staionary ) Faulty throttle cable ... faulty throttle sensor .. best way to find out is to have the car checked out on a Krypton tune machine ( or equvalent ) to determine the fault otherwise you could spend out on un nesscasary parts .. at least the machine would pinpoint it for you .. It is always adviseable if you do your own repairs to get hold of a Haynes manual for your vehicle it will tell you all the best ways of treating most of your cars problems cheaply and efficiently hope this helps Regards Vortash

SOURCE: I'm having a problem with my yamaha yzf1000

This is a diagnostic code telling you there is a problem with the exup valve and/or servo, cables etc. Take the little cover off the exup valve and check the pulley is rotating about 1/3rd of a turn when the revs hit more than 4000 revs. It might be partially seized or a broken cable or problems with the servo. The mechanical bits are easy to fix.

SOURCE: engine fluctuating and cutting out

CODE SCAN FOR FAULTY MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR OR FAULTY IDLE AIR CONTROL VALVE. THE IDLE AIR CONTROL VALVE NOT WORKING.ITS NOT MAINTAINING IDLE SPEED. IDLE SPEED SHOULD BE 820 - 900 RPM.THE THROTTLE BODY NEEDS CLEANING CARBON BUILT UP AROUND THE THROTTLE PLATE.YOU NEED A CAN OF CARBURETOR THROTTLE BODY CLEANER AND OLD TOOTH BRUSH CLEAN INSIDE THROTTLE BODY AND PLATE. DONT GET CARBURETOR CLEAN ON ANY OF THE THROTTLE BODY ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS AND RUBBER AND PLASTICS BECAUSE CARBURETOR CLEANER WILL DSETROY THEM.WORK SAFE AND WEAR SAFETY GLASSES TO KEEP CARBURETOR CLEANER GETTING INTO EYES.

If you've never changed the timing chain on this vehicle, you've gone twice as long as is advised. Not saying that's the issue, but it could be. I've had Subarus for years and change my timing chains at 90K miles, trouble or not.

Which is better: to change the oil every 5,000 miles or when the message: "change oil" appears on the dashboard?

If it is synthetic oil,it depends on what you used. Some are good up to 12K miles. If it is the synthetic and the normal change is at 5K,that should be fine.I am not sure if it is a pre-programmed refernce from the odometer which will turn on the light, but the only alternative would be something which would be able to measure the viscosity of the oil(yet another current unnecessary component to fail in the new technology age, like a check engine light),but I do not think or at least hope that it does not exist. You could call a dealer to see what makes that light come on if you want but if you have 5K oil,5K oil change is fine,if you have 12K oil,12K oil change is fine.Just check your oil level every 750-1,000 miles.

My Harley 883 Sportster suddenly became stuck in 5th gear.

More than likely the shifter pawl has broken. Breaking in 5th gear is kind of unusual however, they usually break between first and second.

You'll have to remove the outer primary cover to look at the shifter pawl. It's partially covered by the clutch assembly.

I just wanted to know the optimal shifting points to do 70mph comfortably. Should the car be at 2500-3000 rpm in 5th gear at 60-65 mph? I typically shift at or around 3k rpm in every gear, and the car...

How many gears does your car have? One of my cars has to do a little over 3000rpm to maintain 70-75 in 5th gear. My other car has to do about 3000rpm to maintain 65-70 in 5th gear.

It all depends on the number of gears your car has and the gearing ratio. The second car I have is geared more optimally for city driving and gets better fuel economy going slower than fast highway speeds.

Having driven several rental cars too I would say anywhere between 2500 to 3000 is reasonable for the average car. If you are driving a vehicle like say a porsche, bmw or audi they may have more gears and may be at a lower rpm at 70mph than your car.

5th gear with 1996 VW Polo

hi mandy
im dave
if it only revs when you put it in 5th gear then it is not in fifth gear. it may look like it but it is not. try moving the gear selector from fourth into neutral releasing the clutch fully then applying the clutch and initiating fifth gear. if that does not work try placing it into one of the other gears first without releasing the clutch and then selecting fifth.
you should be fine driving in four gears as long as you dont travel on the audobahn or at speeds like your on the audobahn. Just watch your redline. try not to go past it. i think it is actually better for your car to drive at higher revolutions than lower as it cleans out your combustion chamber of carbon. on the other hand it is ******* your engine to drive in the red line constantly.
but 3000 rpm in 4th gear probably has you driving 130km/hr (82mph) which should be sufficient and your redline probably does not start until somewhere between 4-5k
