I have an 81 gs850 and I have a charging issue. when I switch my ignition on I lose a major source of power in the battery.

This sounds like the altenator belt is loose. When the altenator is under a load the magnetic field causes the altenator to require more fource to rotate. At higher engine rpms the belt can be slipping on the altenator pulley. There is one other possibility I can think of and that would be that the voltage regulator is faulty and and causing an overvoltage at higher engine speeds and therfore opening up the field circuit to prevent the altenator from over charging the battery this is a safety function of the regulator. I would check the belt first.

If you don't have a manual, check out the gs resources . com. Forums, info, and good people. I got a 1979 3 years ago, and the info there is amazing.!

Start the bike and put a voltmeter across the battery; you should get a reading of probably around 13.5V. If you're getting only about 12V or less, the battery isn't charging. From there you will need to go to the alternator terminal on the regulator and see if you're getting more than 12V. If you are, the regulator is probably bad, if not it could be a bad rectifier if there is a seperate rectifier or a bad stator. Good luck and safe riding.

Personally I would locate an illustrated parts manual for your motor and determine if they are interchangeable. Also, check with a Suzuki dealership for interchangeability of the coils. I am a Harley man personally and I would not even think of putting coils on my motor that are not made for it. Bikes are funny creatures and often very unforgiving. Buy OEM parts made for your particiular model motor and you will be very happy. Don't risk it even if there is a chance they are interchangeable. Are you willing to burn up your ignition system for it?

would just like to add the starter solenoid may be your problem, it can cut ALL power to the bike. (for anyone else with this issue)
