If the pressure cap is not holding pressure, it is allowing water in the coolant to evaporate. It can also let the engine overheat as the pressure raises the boiling point of the coolant to around 250 degrees F. Without pressure the boiling point is much lower, bubbles form reducing circulation and allowing local engine overheating.
Assuming the coolant is not getting into the oil,go to an auto parts store and buy a bottle of "Bars Leak", the one with dehydrated vegetable fibers in water soluble oil, it looks like dark liquid with lumps. (Under no circumstance ever use anything with aluminum flakes in it, even though Bars Leaks makes one like that too.) Stir it up well and use maybe 1/8-1/4 of the jar, at most in the cooling system and top off the coolant. (Or follow Bars Leak instructions) Run the engine to fully warmed up, drive it around and the bars Leak will usually plug the leak. It works by the fibers gathering in the leak, as the water soluble oil dissolves and the water gets to the fibers, they swell up and make a "permanent" repair. Watch the coolant level and engine temperature on your ride home.

Yamaha has a curved washer style clutch spring that it uses for this model. These have been prone to slipping from day 1. Normally when you get on the throttle hot and heavy. A new spring will help the situation for a while but you may have to replace the clutch pack to get more pressure through out the clutch pack if the bike has high miles on it. Maybe the dealer would know if the VMAX spring is heavier and would work as a replacement.

It's located under the left rear cylinder side cover. Loosen the three bolts holding the side cover to the cylinder; you'll find a "trapdoor" into the crankcase. Open the "trapdoor:, and the cylinder bleeder will be immediately beneath it.
