You need to have a code reader hooked up to car so that you can pull the DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) code to find out the problem exactly. It could be many things, but it sounds like it could be an EGR problem/Leak.
Offhand, it would appear to be an air / fuel problem. Initially, check the air box / filter. Verify that there is no air leak and that all air coming in through the carbs passes the filter. This also happens when the air filter and its enclosure has been replaced with open breathers such as K & N's or the exhaust system has been altered.
