I have a 1980 Yamaha xs850. I am trying to figure out the 17 digit VIN, I only have a 9 digit. VIN # 3j2-001698

Yes you can register it with 9 digit VIN # no problemo

Call a Yamaha dealer. If they can't de-code the antique VIN then Google " Yamaha Motor Corporation USA " > and find a number for customer relations. Make enough calls and someone is bound to be able to help.

You won't but the standard haynes covers 99% of what u need it did on mine.

Is the bike water or air cooled?
If air cooled then it is possibly either an oil or fuel issue. If water cooled your water pump or thermostat may not be working.

The VIN number should be 17 characters and found on the frame....should start with JYA

Now count off from the left to the 10th character,,,,,,,
if its an A its a 1980 model, B is an 1981, C is a 1983.

the 4H7 in the VIN means its an XJ650H model made in 1980 & 1981, Look up XJ650 on the net for more info on your bike.

I GOT A YAMAHA 490, NOT SURE ON THE YEAR. IT ONLY HAS A NINE DIGIT VIN(SERIAL NUMBER?), SO I CANT LOOK IT UP. ALSO WANT TO IDENTIFY IT AS A YZ, OR IT.

they went to a 10 digit vin in 1980, so your bike is before 1980. any yamaha dealer shold be able to tell u what it is with the vin # and can help find a manual.
