Hi Terri
Couple of possibilities, depending on the details.
- If you are talking about a power plug, they usually look either like a magnet with a couple of bumps (macbook or Surface chargers, for instance), or a round plug with a longer prong in the middle. If it's like the latter, then either
- this is the wrong plug for your computer,
- The central pin is bent or damaged and can't slide in because of the bend or angle.
- There is something lodged in the hole on your computer that the center prong goes into.
- there is something stuck to the plug end of the cable. All of the above can be checked fairly quickly.
If there might be something in the plug hole, start by trying to blow it out with canned, clean compressed air. If you move on to trying tweezers or such, get a strong light first and look to make sure something is there, and, if possible, turn the laptop off first and remove the battery. This will reduce the risk of shorting or damaging something if you short anything in the plug receptacle while digging around in there.
If you're talking about a different sort of plug, such as an ethernet cable, most of the above still applies. Check the plug for damage, check the receptacle for damage or blockage, gently clean the area.
hope this helps.
