The voltage on the coils is present except at the instant of firing. The interruption of the voltage is what causes the coil to fire. The cdi box is what causes the voltage interruption.
The interruption is very hard to detect. You are not the first to be stymied by that box. If you have access to an oscilloscope, I think you can see the pulse if it occurs.

  • Do you see spark? If not, check the side stand kill switch. It kills the engine so that you don’t start out with the side stand down. If broken or out of adjustment, it would kill the spark. Check for a broken wire at the side stand switch and coupler. Try moving the side stand kill switch by hand. If that doesn’t work then wire a jumper around the switch to bypass it.
  • Is the handlebar kill switch on? Is it shorted out?
  • Are you getting power to the coils?
  • Check the fuses. How good is the battery? Try a jump start from your car battery.
  • Check the operation of the ignition switch and all kill switches with a volt ohmmeter. Check the wiring harness. Did a wire come unplugged? Are all wires clean and with solid connections? Any abraded or pinched wires? Is the bike in neutral and the neutral light is lit up? If no neutral light, check the neutral switch and neutral switch wire on center or side casing. If still no spark, get CDI system and coils checked at the dealers shop.

hi,sounds to me like your cdi pickup unit has failed,i am not 100% certain but this will be located on the end of the crankshaft behind one of the enginecovers, there could be two other possibilities, motox bikes are notorious for breaking wires so check the wiring from the cdi sender unit to the cdi box and the coil, also check your "off"button it may be stuck in the "kill" position..hope this helps..cheers ian

My 2002 Yamaha Road Star Midnight has no spark

I have 2002 road star midnight. I lost completely spark on all 4 spark plugs. Before bike was running OK but sometimes on low RPM while idling would skip a firing on a at least one cylinder making spufff like sound. I put new spark plugs, and wiggled a little coil wires. Bike with new spurk plugs would not fire up at all. Checked for spark on all 4 spark plugs - no spark., not even an electrical I lost completely spark on all 4 spark plugs. Before bike was running OK but sometimes on low RPM while idling would skip a firing on a at least one cylinder making spufff like sound. I put new spark plugs, and wiggled a little coil wires. Bike with new spark plugs would not fire up at all. Checked for spark on all 4 spark plugs - no spark., not even an electrical charge going to spark plug. Went back to coils. Each coil (there 2 of them) has 2 spark plug wires and 2 ignition timing signal wires connected to them. I realized that these ignition timing wires contacts are corroded to the point they would not conduct a charge from the distributor to coil. CLEAN ALL THE TIMING WIRES Contacts on the coils. I did that and bike fired up right away and started running much better without sputtering or skipping a cylinder firing. SO DISCONNECT ALL THE COIL WIRES AND BRUSH THE CONTACTS WITH A SMALL METAL WIRE BRUSH.

I have a 2002 Yamaha 1600 motorcycle and no spark is it the CDI I put new coils

I would replace the ignition pickup first, the CDI rarely fails.

I have a 1996 xj600 Yamaha. I 've been experiencing a engine miss fire. I checked for spark by pulling each plug and grounding them out on the block. Number 4 doesn't spark at all, so I replaced the plugs...

could be a bad wire or plug cap they have a resister in them, each coil fires two plugs, so if the other one works off that coil the cdi is probably ok.
pull the caps off and check the resistance from the plug wire back to the coil ground, they need to be the same, the wires are moulded into the coils so if one has high or open resistance-new coil required

How to trouble shoot just the cdi unit on a yahama yfb250e--1993

Yamaha ignition coils never go bad. It is probably the Stator/ Pulser coil (very common). You can check them with a ohm meter. You'll need the readings from a Yamaha dealership. The CDI box is very seldom bad But there is no checks that can be done on it. If everything else is fine ---than Yamaha says it must be the CDI box.(Rare)
