Odometer does not light up at night

Could be a problem with the engine computer, or the speed sensor in the transmission.
Is the check engine light on ?

These lights for the dash are controlled by a rheostat instrument control dimmer switch next to the main light switch for the headlights, it is either turned off (have seen this dozens of times) or it is defective. Below is a picture of the switch assembly I speak of. The thumb wheel next to the knob is the dimmer control.

just a key note on early yamahas from what i here early model r1s 99s are supposed to be some of the best as they are raw and great fun to drive more of an untamed bike havent driven one but supposed to be good fun for a proper biker good luck
