Its hard to say with out a lot more information .
But my first thought would be clutch related check the fluid level and how dose it look and smell .
If the clutch is not fully disengaging on the other hand them the noise could coming from the transmission .
Like I said from your decription it sounds something is engaged that shouldn't be with the engine running

2000 Harley Davidson FXDWG Dyna Wide Glide remove the battery @

Hi, Anonymous for this scenario you will need your service manual that has all fastener torque specs -fluid capacities and a wiring diagram on the back pages, parts fiche, and owners manual if you can not find the best tool you ever bought for your Honda, despair not, for a mere zero $0 you can download another one.

97 fxdl, difference between narrow/wide glide componants

You need the complete front end including the wheel. The FXDWG is somewhat of an oddball in that a lot of parts fit only that bike. A lot of other parts will not fit a Wide Glide. This even applies to the exhaust system.

Measure the diameter of your upper fork tubes, they're 39 mm tubes. The Wide Glide uses 41 mm tubes. The Wide Glide also uses a 21" front wheel.

Washer makes a loud, pulsing, screeching noise with no spinning

Sounds like a transmission problem. Not worth the repair judging from age.
