A too tight tappet adjustment can do more than reduce mileage - it effectively changes the valve timing and can lead to burned valves and seats.
It is best not to prejudge such situations - it is generally believed the expansion of metals when the engine is at working temperature causes the tappet clearance to reduce. This isn't always the case when an aluminium cylinder head is used. Aluminium expands a much greater amount than steel and so working temperature can cause the valve clearances to increase.
