I have a 1985 Honda Shadow 500 -- the rear brake has begun sticking. I have taken it as far apart as I can, following the Clymer manual, but can't figure out how to compress the return spring to get it off. I suspect the return spring is tired out and needs replacing, or the spindle system needs cleaning. Also it seems I can't get the brake spindle support bracket off without taking off the entire exhaust system -- any suggestions? Many thanks Howie

I drilled a 1/8th dia hole in the top of the pivot where the brake pedal slips on to the spline.now i put a couple of drops of oil in the hole and work the brake pedal by hand. till it loosens up. i also installed a 2nd return spring on the brake lever at the wheel anchored to the brake pivot at the swingarm pivot. it works for me. kr

The Clymer manual is great -- published by Primedia, Overland park, Kansas ISBN 0-89287-632-8. I got mine at a Honda dealer.
