I agree. Fuses should break power connections, but melting wires will reroute power. And as the other expert says, it could be antifreeze steam, freon, or deadly exhaust gas (lucky that the invisible gas mixed with visible vapor).

Smoke is never a good thing. If the smoke smells like burning plastic, you probably have an electrical problem somewhere under there and should stop using the vehicle immediately and get it to an auto electric shop for repairs. Waiting could cause failure, or worse, fire. If the smell is exhaust-like, then you may have an exhaust leak under the hood and it is coming in thru the ventilation system. This should be checked out quickly, since carbon monoxide, present in engine exhaust, is a toxic poison that can kill if the concentration gets too high. If you must use the vehicle with exhaust gases entering the passenger compartment (and it is never recommended!), ensure all the windows are open to get plenty of fresh air, regardless of the weather conditions outside -- cold and wet is better than warm, dry, and DEAD!

I have a 1994 gmc jimmy. it started at first with losing power on small hills to where I would have to pull over and wait a few minutes and then start it again and no?w it smokes when you drive it. C

If you have smoke coming out of the tailpipe, it's not likely the transmission. Smoke coming out of the tailpipe is an engine problem, possibly rings. Rings will cause loss of power, too, as well as increased oil consumption.

White Smoke Coming from Engine?

It sounds like you need a good mechanic to fix your oil leaks. It's probably the valve cover gasket leaking oil on the cylinder head and it's running down on the hot exhaust manifold.

When driving my 1996 gmc jimmy today, the heater was on and smoke started coming from the vents of the heater system. we turned off the heater and smoke kept coming out and was turning the windshield ...

Your heater core is leaking. if it was left disconnected the engine coolant would have come out immediately upon starting the engine the very first time..

Smoke/Vapor coming from Air Vents

The whole dashboard of the vehicle will need to be disassembled, removal of stereo, temp controls, air vents, the dashboard will need to actually be pulled away from the front of the cabin, It is a very labor intensive repair.

99 cavalier Smoke coming out from under dashboard!

now this may be a long shot... but i had a similar problem on my cutlass. but it wasnt wiring...... it was from the tube running from the head of my engine...... the smell and smoke were coming from hot oil coming out of the crank case vent tube and then being sucked into the air inlet for the heater/ ac.

since a electrical wire's protective cover is petroleum based as is oil.... they smell very similar

Cold weater start problem. Oil smoke in from the heater vent.

The same problem happened to me and it turned out to be my heater core.

Normally smoke will come from the heater core when it needs to be replaced.

Also the smell is most likely anti-freeze and and you normally smell it when your
engine is running warm or hot.

Check your coolant levels to be sure. and the hoses leading to your Heater Core

heater cores for that vehicle normally run $180 - $230 and you need to remove your
entire Instrument Panel (IP) (Dashboard) to replace it.

I hope this helps!
