Where is the fuel pump relay and how can e serviced?

Description

*: ECM determines the start signal status by the signals of engine speed and battery voltage.
The ECM activates the fuel pump for several seconds after the ignition switch is turned ON to improve engine start ability. If the ECM receives a engine speed signal from the camshaft position sensor (PHASE), it knows that the engine is rotating, and causes the pump to operate. If the engine speed signal is not received when the ignition switch is ON, the engine stalls. The ECM stops pump operation and prevents battery discharging, thereby improving safety. The ECM does not directly drive the fuel pump. It controls the ON/OFF fuel pump relay, which in turn controls the fuel pump.

Component Function Check
1.CHECK FUEL PUMP FUNCTION
1. Turn ignition switch ON.
2. Pinch fuel feed hose (2) with two fingers.
1 : Air cleaner assembly


Fuel pressure pulsation should be felt on the fuel feed hose for 1 second after ignition switch is turned ON.
Is the inspection result normal? YES >> INSPECTION END
NO >> EC-466, "Diagnosis Procedure".
Diagnosis Procedure
1.CHECK FUEL PUMP POWER SUPPLY CIRCUIT-I
1. Turn ignition switch OFF.
2. Disconnect ECM harness connector.
3. Turn ignition switch ON.
4. Check the voltage between ECM harness connector and ground.


Is the inspection result normal? YES >> GO TO 4.
NO >> GO TO 2.
2.CHECK FUEL PUMP POWER SUPPLY CIRCUIT-II
1. Turn ignition switch OFF.
2. Disconnect IDPDM E/R harness connector F10.
3. Check the continuity between IPDM E/R harness connector and ECM harness connector.

Is the inspection result normal? YES >> GO TO 3.
NO >> Repair open circuit or short to ground or short to power in harness or connectors.
3.CHECK CONDENSER-1 POWER SUPPLY CIRCUIT-I
1. Reconnect all harness connectors disconnected.
2. Disconnect condenser-1 harness connector.
3. Turn ignition switch ON.
4. Check the voltage between condenser-1 harness connector and ground.


Is the inspection result normal? YES >> GO TO 5.
NO >> GO TO 4.
4.CHECK 15A FUSE
1. Turn ignition switch OFF.
2. Disconnect 15A fuse (No. 32) from IPDM E/R.
3. Check 15A fuse.
Is the inspection result normal? YES >> GO TO 6.
NO >> Replace fuse.
5.CHECK CONDENSER-1 POWER SUPPLY CIRCUIT-II
1. Disconnect IPDM E/R harness connector E18.
2. Check the continuity between IPDM E/R harness connector and condenser-1 harness connector.

3. Also check harness for short to ground and short to power.
Is the inspection result normal? YES >> GO TO 13.
NO >> GO TO 7.
6.DETECT MALFUNCTIONING PART
Check the following.
??? Harness connectors E29, B10
??? IPDM E/R connector F10
??? Harness for open or short between IPDM E/R and condenser-I
>> Repair open circuit or short to power in harness or connectors.
7.CHECK CONDENSER GROUND CIRCUIT
1. Turn ignition switch OFF.
2. Disconnect dropping resistor harness connector.
3. Check the continuity between condenser-I harness connector and ground.

4. Also check harness for short to ground and short to power.
Is the inspection result normal? YES >> GO TO 8.
NO >> Repair open circuit or short to power in harness or connectors.
8.CHECK CONDENSER-1
Refer to EC-469, "Component Inspection (Condenser-1)".
Is the inspection result normal? YES >> GO TO 9.
NO >> Replace condenser-1.
9.CHECK FUEL PUMP POWER SUPPLY CIRCUIT-III
1. Disconnect ???fuel level sensor unit and fuel pump??? harness connector.
2. Check the continuity between IPDM E/R harness connector and ???fuel level sensor unit and fuel pump??? and ground.

Is the inspection result normal? YES >> GO TO 11.
NO >> GO TO 10.
10.DETECT MALFUNCTIONING PART
Check the following.

No power to fuel pump or starter after battery box was jarred? ran code tester on it no code comes up?

This is a hard one all i can think is a bad wire connection.. At the postive cable there are sometimes additional wire or wires attached to the cable where it connects to the battery.. Check to see if these wire are broken. or disconnected. I'm not sure of this car but some of the late models have a seperate "Main" fuse for fuel pump/starter check to see if you find a fuse box inder the hood some where near your battery. These will not be the standard fuses you see in the main fuse box but unusually large ones. The fuel pump has a circut that turns it off if the car is hit. or hits something. usually there is a pull cable in the trunk to reset this safety feature.. The fuel pump relay is powered from the computer but with main 12v power.. giood luck.

Replaced the fuel pump in my 1990 toyota corrola and it still won't work. Is there a safety switch or something that I need to flip? All the fuses work.

There is a fuse it is listed as EFI.Also check the main fuse. And the fuel pump relay. Make sure its not open have someone cycle the ignition switch when you are near the fuel tank do you hear the fuel pump come on? If this method check out and still no fuel pump action,let get you a tool.get a paper clip.find the DLC it in the engine compartment (You are a OBD 1) on the cover match up the mark to the DLC pins there are 2 row a single row and a 3 row. Where is says FP is fuel pump where it says B+ is battery voltage jump the FP and B+ together the fuel pump should turn on while you are jumping those 2 terminal together have someone crank the engine.Tip on you tool with key on as you jump FP and B+ and you see little spark voltage that a good sign the fuel pump has power if you dont your power is somehow disconnected

How to replace fuel module regulator

to replace the fuel pump module.first you need to relieve the fuel system pressure.turn off radio first, then disconnect the negative battery cable.drain fuel from fuel tank.then then safely raise support car on jack stands. make sure sitting on solid level ground then remove the fuel charcoal canister hoses and vent line remove disconnect fuel pump. disconnect fuel pump electrical connector and remove fuel filler hose from fuel tank then remove the fuel tank from the vechicle.the heat shield and the rear exhaust system may have to be remove if you problem dropping the fuel tank.once fuel tank dropped you need snap ring pliers to remove the fuel pump module retaining ring.disconnect the fuel pump sending unit.disconnect the fuel pressure sensor and fuel pump module electrical connector .if you need help to replace the fuel level sending unit.you need a haynes repair manual.it has instruction how to remove and replace the fuel level sending unit.but most of the time the whole new fuel pump module come with new fuel level sending unit.if you are replacing fuel pump.when done put every thing back visa versa. be very careful working around gasoline and fuel tank.dont smoke.becareful dont make no sparks with wrenches when removing gas tank.wear safety glasses and have a helper at all times. dont work under vechicle by your self.

Replaced fuel pump, sometimes it will start and sometimes it won't. Disconnect the battery and it will start again and runs O.K. Is there a relay that resets it self when the battery gets disconnected.

No, the fuel pump relay does not reset when the power is removed, unless there is something wrong.

Try to locate the fuel pump relay with the following fuse box diagrams and wiggle it to make sure it is seated well.

How to Replace a Fuel Pump

Parts:

1. 3/8 in. Drive Ratchet
2. Floor Jack
3. Multimeter
4. Jack Stand Set
5. Flat Head Screwdriver
6. Mallet Hammer
7. Socket Set

Steps:
Step 1 * Locate the fuel pump.
o Tip: Safety Tip:Always wear safety glasses when working on your vehicle. Wear other personal protective equipment (PPE) when necessary, for example latex gloves or safety shoes.

Step 2 * Have a friend turn the key to the“ON” position while you listen for a high pitched hiss/whine coming from the electric fuel pump.
o Tip: If the fuel pump is located in the fuel tank, you can open the fuel cap and listen to hear the fuel pump. The fuel pump should run (priming the system with fuel) for a couple of seconds. Once it stops, you should be able to start the vehicle.

Step 3 * If the fuel pump does not make a sound (run and prime the fuel system) check to see if there is a fuse that supplies power to the fuel pump and check its location.
o Tip: Check the owner’s manual for location of the fuse box and fuel pump fuse.

Step 4 * Once you have found the location of the fuel pump fuse, remove the fuse from its housing and check to see if it is blown.
o Tip: A blown fuse will usually have a metal strip connecting both tabs that“blows out” (the wire looks as if it has been chopped in half or broken).

Step 5 * If you noticed that the fuse was blown, replace the fuse with a new fuse of the same amperage and repeat step 2.

Step 6 * If the fuel pump now works, you do not need to replace it. However, you will need to find what caused the fuel pump fuse to blow. We strongly recommend that this is done through a certified shop, unless you have the tools and knowledge to test electrical systems and diagnose more in depth problems.

Step 7 * If the fuse wasn’t blown, it should be checked for power and ground at the fuel pump. If there is power and ground present then you will need to replace the fuel pump.
o Tip: On most vehicles you may need to lower the fuel tank to access the power and ground leads for the fuel pump.

Step 8 * Siphon or drain as much fuel as possible from the fuel tank. Disconnect any possible fuel lines from the fuel tank.

Step 9 * Remove any retaining straps or bolts holding the fuel tank to the frame.
o Tip: You may be able to access the fuel pump from the bottom of the back seat or the trunk of the vehicle.

Step 10 * Using a digital multi meter, turn the key to the“ON” position and check for power at the fuel pump. Touch the negative lead from the DMM to a good ground and the positive lead of the DMM to the power cable at the fuel pump. You should have a reading that is equal to battery power. If you do not have a reading at all, you will need to inspect the power side of the fuel pump.
o Tip: With the ground lead of the DMM still connected to a good ground, touch the power lead to the positive side of the battery, to each side of the fuse, and again to the fuel pump. Wherever you notice the voltage reading goes from battery voltage to 0 you will need to replace whatever wires and fuse are in between.

Step 11 * If you have noticed that the power and ground being supplied to the fuel pump are both good, then you will need to replace the fuel pump.
o Tip: To check for a good ground, place the negative lead from the DMM to the ground side of the fuel pump, and the positive lead of the DMM to the positive side of the battery. If the reading on the DMM is battery voltage then you have a good ground.

Step 12 * Remove any retaining rings or bolts that hold the fuel pump in the fuel tank.

Step 13 * Remove any electrical connections or fuel lines connected to the fuel pump. Replace the fuel pump.
o Tip: If equipped, inspect and replace strainer as needed.

Step 14 * Use reverse procedure to install fuel pump and assemble all components back to their original state.

Step 15 * Start the vehicle to verify repairs.

Disconnecting fuse when changing fuel pump

what you don't know is that you have to disconnect your Pos Cable, that disconnects any communication between your Computer and your Battery. Who the Man?, Leave your Negative Connected. Hey, all you gotta do is wait 10 Minutes. Can you do that? Re-Connect your Pos and watch, all your lights are out.
