By floating crank I assume you mean the crankshaft endfloat is excessive?
Crankshaft endfloat is controlled by thrustwashers fitted at one of the main bearings. The thrustwashers are sometimes separate but are often integral with the main bearing shells.
Close control of the crankshaft endfloat is important, not the least reason is the correct timing chain, belt or gear alignment depends on it.
As long as a good oil supply is maintained to the bearings the endfloat is likely to be maintained. Excessive wear is unusual and if excessive endfloat becomes a problem it is almost certainly the result of other problems.
The thrustwashers tend to wear very little and the thrust face of the crankshaft usually wears at least as much as the thrustwashers.
In the case of excessive crank endfloat the oil pan must be removed along with whichever main bearing houses the thrustwashers and replaced as required if the thrust face(s) of the crank is little worn and perfectly smooth. It is sometimes possible to obtain oversize washers but if this step proves insufficient some engineering magic will be needed or a replacement crankshaft.
