Why my 1997 mercury cougar lost all power

well the battery was dead. , the starter is dead and fails to crank then engine. (turns over has no meaning, some say cranks other claims runs means turns over )
but I get it the starter motor is dead
then jumped cabled after 10min the dead battery is now just tad charged up but you removed the JUMP and the engine stalled I guess..
lights use only 10 amps of current , but the starter need 30 times more current and fails. 300amp to 500 amp hr battery is bad or lugs rusty or loose.
or the alternator is bad .
the cluster lamp , has charge/ battery lamp if this glows after the successful jump. the alternator is bad. (or belt to it failing/slipping)
keep in mind an alternator switches off line if any battery gross fault is detected (shorted battery cells or open)
batteries with shorted cell explode (acid rupture max)
batteries open cell (10v battery )the voltage can go so high over 19v
that electronics blows up, $1000 or more, damage
so the regulator takes the alternator off line , until corrected.
saving everyone and every thing from those horrors above.
what I do is fully test the battery first, charged and load tested.
or take to a autostore or shop and test it.

the battery they love to fail 5 to 7 years old.
that is there THING , short lived. same with belts, tires, hoses ,pads
tests are easy
get the battery load tested
or charge the battery fully using a real battery charger 15amps, best.
and test the alternator, after good battery works and starter works and engine runs
battery voltage running is 13v to 15vdc, if not the ALT is bad or its 3 fuses blown.(up to)
key off battery voltage fully rested battery say 1hour, is 12.6vdc,not 10.

also a weak battery can wake up, as they rest and the acid mix inside
the cells gets uniform it can gain capacity. this is common.
just key off ,lamps off, and battery can self improve.
if start is dead , learn to crank not just in park but try NEUTRAL.
bam it crank,s.

MY CAPTIVA REFUSED TO START. After a jump was able to start it. Had battery checked, fully charged, no issues. Car sat overnight & is now dead. Yes, made sure lights, etc were off.

I can think of 2 possibilities. A battery can be quirky sometimes. It may check out fine, but then loose standing storage very quickly. To check this. Charge battery fully up and check it with a VOM (or just start the car with it to prove its working) Shut the car off - Then disconnect the battery negative post so that the battery is not connected to the car. Rehook the battery up after 12 hours and see if it starts the car again. If it doesn't start, battery is probably bad. If the battery then starts the car, you have an electrical drain somewhere that is running the battery down when the car sits. This can be anything from an aftermarket alarm to a amp stuck on. Have someone check how much power is drawn at the battery with everything off.

I just replaced my battery in my 2001 volkswagen turbo beetle and my battery light is still on, why? I had the alternator and starter tested they read good!

the battery might need charged. every battery you get even one a mechinc fits for you. you should always take it out and recharge it yourself overnight. some batteries have dead cells due to sitting so long not being used. the older a battery is the more likely that is. through time a battery loses its charge. it could be a defective cell not able to charge. as i had on my car 7 months ago. i got a new battery and it kept going flat. i had to jump start my car EVERY day. i got sick of it, took the battery back and got them to check it, it was a dead cell. your battery might have some power but not fully charged. try this and put it back in. if light comes back on, it could be just a light that never likes to ******* aitting there in your face all day.

Replaced battery. still would not start. Cleaned treminal of all corrision. cranked fine. however 1 day later would not start. jump started . drove a couple of miles but when I turned on lights, engine...

Sounds like a bad alternator. Drained your battery and when you turned on the lights it took all the power left in your battery. When you drain a battery down that far, they are real hard to jump, and coupled with the alternator, the car is not producing enough current to start and stay running.

I would take the alternator off and take it to oyur local auto parts store to be tested. If bad, replace it and charge the battery fully before starting. Then check voltage at battery with motor running. Should be 13.2 -14 Volts DC. If not, you may have a bad battery cable or blown fusible link. (especially that if the alternator tests good).....Mike

Battery was completely dead- so I just purchased a new one. The weather had been very cold with plenty of snow 0-25F. Did not attempt to start my car for about ten days but when I did the battery was...

That would probably be your alternator. The car doesnt take as much power to keep running as the lights. The lights use alot of power and if the battery is doing the alternators job it drains quickly. The battery is only designed to start the car then the alternator should take over and recharge the battery. When the alternator fails the battery will soon fail. Even though you had to jump the battery it was still new so it had a big charge. That is why you were able to drive so far. On an old battery and a jump I've seen people drive a long ways until they turn on their lights. I say 99.99% sure it's your alternator. Here is how you can test it. Get your car jump started again or charge your battery and start your car. While it is running get out and unhook the positive battery cable from the battery. If your car dies, you have found your problem(the alternator). I hope that I could be of some help. Good luck.

Well contact your dealer and tell them that your battery is gone bad for no reason and don't mention you let the light overnight because your battery is under warranty and they will put in a new one. Good luck
