Most auto parts stores will scan the engine codes free or allow you to use theirs on site. Scan the code and post it back here for additional help.

Did the 'Check Engine' Light come ON? Whenever the 'CHECK ENGINE' light comes on, the ECU (Engine Control Unit) sets a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC). These codes identify the particular engine management system which caused the light to come on. You'll need to use/find an OBDII (On-Board Diagnostic) Scanner to retrieve any code which have been stored in the ECU computer. Afterward, we might be able to help you DIAGNOSE and perhaps eventually fix the problem.

Has the bike been stored for any long length of time?
old fuel in the carburetor will turn to a varnish like residue blocking the jets,or possibly water in the carburetor.

Testimonial: "The bike was not stored and was ridden regularly, but it still sounds like it could be the carburetor. Thanks for your insight."

I have a Briggs & Stratton Vanguard 16 HP motor. It idles fine and it runs OK at high RPMS. But it backfires thru the carburetor during accelerating. Any suggestions?

On some float-type carburetors, you can adjust the air-fuel mixture and engine speed at idle. Check for an idle speed screw designed to keep the throttle plate from closing completely, and an idle mixture screw that limits the flow of fuel at idle. If your carburetor contains these screws, proceed below.
  1. With the engine off, remove the air filter and air cartridge.
  2. Locate the idle mixture screw and turn it clockwise until the needle lightly touches the seat. Then, turn the screw counterclockwise 1-1/2 turns.
  3. If your carburetor has a main jet adjustment screw at the base of the float bowl, turn the screw clockwise until you feel it just touch the seat inside the emulsion tube. Then, turn the screw counterclockwise 1 to 1-1/2 turns. Replace the air cleaner assembly and start the engine for final carburetor adjustments.
  4. Run the engine for five minutes at half throttle to bring it to its operating temperature. Then, turn the idle mixture screw slowly clockwise until the engine begins to slow. Turn the screw in the opposite direction until the engine again begins to slow . Finally, turn the screw back to the midpoint.
  5. Using a tachometer to gauge engine speed , set the idle speed screw to bring the engine to 1750 RPM for aluminum-cylinder engine or 1200 RPM for engine with a cast-iron cylinder sleeve.
  6. With the engine running at idle , hold the throttle lever against the idle speed screw to bring the engine speed to "true idle." Then, repeat the idle mixture screw adjustments from Step 4 to fine-tune the mixture .

Stalling at low idle

I don't know this specific car. But, if it has one, check your Idle Air Valve. This can cause the engine to stall. If you can hold the gas pedal and the engine will continue to run until you let off the gas, it is likely the IAV. It will not necessarily cause the engine to run rough. That could be a number of things like spark plugs, wires or dirty injectors. It could also be a compression problem. Is the check engine light on?

Engine does 'nt run on idle speed in a forklift truck

You may have to change the needles in the carb or a basic rebuild. also check your idle screw to see if it vibrated back to too low a setting

It sounds like the fuel mixture is running very Lean..There are usually two adjusting screw screws on the carburettor that control the mixture. A Larger one is for the Main Jet and a smaller one for the Idle Jet. There is also an adjusting screw on the throttle butterfly to control the idle speed.
To adjust setup, start with at least a half tank of fuel, and have engine at operating tempurature (That is warm but not overly Hot). As a starting point, loosen (anticlockwise) Main Jet screw about half a turn, to richen mixture,so that engine will run without choke. Run engine at full speed and adjust main jet for highest smooth speed without engine missing due to mixture being too lean or rich.
Allow engine to idle and the adjust Idle Jet Screw for smoothest idle. Idle Speed screw may have to be adjusted if idle speed is too high/low.
Sequence above may have to be repeated to get best running. If engine hesitates sometime when sudden load is applied but then picks up, try adjusting Main Jet by 1/8 to 1/4 turn richer until it handles the load without faltering.

After running for about a half hour or so it begins to stall in between cuts . . should i adjust the low, high or idle screw

Is the chain being properly oiled? You should get a thin line of oil after running the tip of the saw near to a piece of paper or cardboard for moment or two. Is the saw getting overly hot after running? Clean the cylinder and air passages with compressed air if it is. Check the muffler for any plugging of spark arrestor screen. Turn both jet screws CW to stops (lightly) then turn both out 1-1/2 turns CCW for a basic setting. Pull throttle full on (after warm up) and adjust H for high engine speed, but 4-stroking that smooths out immediately when cutting. Release throttle and adjust L for fairly smooth idle, but rich enough to allow the engine to 'follow-the-throttle'. Adjust idle speed so that the chain stops moving. Hope this helps.
