SOURCE: TTR 90 wont start. Not carb. Not CDI. Plug cap?

Every component plays a part in the ignition system. Check the wiring as you go. Start at one end and move forward. You have done a lot of work so far. so you should be close. If the igniter is fine and the other components too. Then it would narrow it down to an electrical problem or no signal/pulse to the coil. See if the coil is receiving that pulse. you can use a test light for this test. Pos. will be power and NEG. will be the pulse. With light on the NEG. crank the engine over and see if it flashes. Let me know how its going.

SOURCE: i need help i have a 1990 yz 125 i have fire from

you run the positive lead from the cdi to the positive lead on the coil.... then somewhere between the negative lead on the coil and the frame/engine ground you splice in the kill switch.........what that does is breaks the ground when you push the kill switch which then kills the spark to the motor

I have no spark on my 94 ext and it has a new stator and cdi box and igntion coil

Bypass your ignition switch , kill switch, and carburetor safety switches(on the side of the carburetors). All common problems for older sleds (stopping spark). In the carburetors the magnets inside the slides come off killing the spark. There is a kill switch bypass wire in most arctic tool kits. Ignition switches are notorious for going bad and are easily bypassed by simply unplugging them.

Hi i have a dinli 100cc quad bike .the quad will nt start and there is no ignition i have checked the spark plug so can you help me if you can i will be very happy

I assume that is a 100cc, 2 stroke ATV? If the starter motor is spinning, and you just don't have any spark. First, replace the spark plug. If that doesn't fix it, then you may have one of the following problems: Bad CDI, Kill Switch or Rip Cord Shut off switch, Frayed wire shorting out, cracked/damaged spark plug cap, bad coil or coil wire, bad stator. My bet is on the kill switch and/or Lanyard/Rip Cord shut off switch or the CDI. You can bypass your shutoff switches to see if they are the problem by either disconnecting the wires or connecting them together(depending on the type of system you have). CDI's routinely fail on small engines and generally cost about $20-$70, depending on the style. www.solanocycle.com

I have a1980 gs 850. i have no spark at the plugs. someone said i should start at the CDI box? How can you test this?

  • Start with new spark plugs. Do you see spark? If not, check the side stand kill switch. It kills the engine so that you don’t start out with the side stand down. If broken or out of adjustment, it would kill the spark. Check for a broken wire at the side stand switch and coupler. Try moving the kill switch by hand. If that doesn’t work then wire a jumper around the switch to bypass it.
  • Check the fuses. How good is the battery? Is the handlebar kill switch on?
  • Check the operation of the ignition switch and all kill switches with a volt ohmmeter. Check the wiring harness. Did a wire come unplugged? Are all wires clean and with solid connections? Any abraded or pinched wires? Is the bike in neutral and the neutral light is lit up? If no neutral light, check the neutral switch and neutral switch wire on center casing.
  • Then, If still no spark, get CDI system and coils checked at the dealers shop.

Is the bike in neutral and the neutral light is lit up? If no neutral light, check the neutral switch and neutral switch wire on center casing. If still no spark, get CDI system and coils checked at the dealers shop. You can screw up a CDI unit checking it yourself.

1980 Honda Cm400a No spark

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Bypassing the kill switch means removing the connection of the black / white wire either at the emergency stop switch (kill/run), ignition switch or preferably at the CDI connector.

Additionally, you can try:
  • start with the side stand up;
  • check/wiggle the 6 wires coming from the stator going to the CDI.

Would appreciate a postback on results / updates.

Good luck and thank you for using FixYa.
