  • Try moving the shift lever up a notch or two. This will help eliminate any accidental lifting of the shift lever by the shoe. No cost to try this one.
  • Your bike has a shift drum index wheel that holds gear positions. The spring may be weak on the index wheel arm. This is the low cost attempt a solution to the problem.

  • The other potential problem is a slightly bent shift fork. It may only be barely engaging into first gear. This is the more expensive of the three potential solutions.

SOURCE: BMW R1150GS 8 years old, 5700 miles. Trouble engaging 1st gear

It's a problem thats common in the Adventures and I think it has to do with the driveshaft set up. I generally let clutch out slighty when kicking it down to 1st and that does the trick. I dont think there's anything mechanically wrong, just one of those glitches in the design.

Hi Buddy
There is not an easy solution to your gearbox problem,it is general wear on the 'dogs' or 'shift drum'..The only other thing it could be is wear on the 'external shift mechanism'.
I,ve just rebuilt a 1996 vn1500 classic whitch had the same problem so if you need any advise or step by step photos please email me at '[email protected]'

When i engage eiather 1st or 2nd gear from neutral bike seems to grab and make a clunk noise, once rolling no problems

Older 4 speed transmissions were known for their "clunk" going into 1st gear.

However, even though you didn't give a model year, I'll assume you mean something newer than those.

If it "grabs" when going from neutral to 1st (bike wants to "jump"), it usually means the clutch push rod (under the primary cover's "Derby cover) needs adjustment, followed by the clutch cable.

As far as the leak where the cable enters the transmission, there is an "o-ring" seal that might need replacing.

Cant find neutral on a 1978 Yamaha 650 motorcycle?

Is this something that was working fine and then stopped? What's your experience level with this or any bike? Neutral would normally be a "half click" between 1st and 2nd - meaning with first all the way down, you would need to make a gentle step up on the shifter into neutral - a normal upstep would take you to second. It's not unusual to get kind of stuck there when the bike is stationary - with the bike running and in first, you should be able to release the clutch enough to pull ahead just a couple of feet...then neutral should be just a gentle upstep away.

How to drive?

you can ride the cluthch on a bike un like a car you wont hurt it its oil lubricated constantly, sitting on the bike pull the clutch in with your left hand and click the left foot lever down in to 1st, then learn how to click it back up 1 half movement in to neutral. the neutral light will come on sfter the bike enters neutral. in first gear give the throttle on the right hand a squeeze and pull the clutch in with your left hand put foot gear selector down in to 1 st and begin to release clutch slowly. hold on as bike will engage may be jerky balance yourself! when you get moving stop! by pulling the clutch in and the hand brake as you close the throttle to stop! practice your take off many times some where safe! when you get your balance in 1st gear pick up speed and begin shifting the foot gear selector up in to 2nd gear and practice closing the throttle and breaking to a safe stop. gears are generslly 1st down 1 click 2345 and6th all up from there and neutral is 1 half a click up from 1st between 2nd gear. And dont put it in gear with the kick stand down t may stall on you

hope this helps

Neutral light does not come on until 2nd gear is engaged

The neutral light should only light between 1st and 2nd gears. There may be a "false neutral" at other places. Wear exacerbates (i love big words) the size of these but they don't hurt anything as long as the bike shifts well.
