SOURCE: ring gear spins freely in both directions when starter is remove

Very unlikely that ring gear has separated from clutch. If this model has clutch dogs on ring gear ( ring gear not permanently fixed to housing) then one or all of the tension springs have weakened and don't allow ring gear to lock in one direction.

May I suggest a trip to your local library. Cycle repair books should be in 646 stacks of reference.

SOURCE: how do you bypass the wiring for a 1980 yamaha 250

Generally for old bikes, removal of any loom connections in FRONT of ignition coil will do it. But beware. you have no way of turning the bike off except swift removal off the plug lead. High rev use will also damage rectifier/regulator and cdi units as correct source coils have been wrongly circuited with no lights.

I am trying to locate the starter on my 1986 1300 Yamaha

The best way to do this, is to follow the posotive wire from the side of the battery, this is the thick wire from the battery to the starter solenoide and. Then down to the starter on the engine

The yz 250 1986 has the same engine as the tri z

no it is not the same.

Tranny is closer for yz
YZ has no lightning coil
intake system is far different from both.

BUT fitting is the same, so switching from one frame to another may be doable.
