If your engine stops and then the carburetor floods, your needle and seat is not closing correctly. This can be caused by dirt or varnish being caught in the needle and seat.
A good clean with some carburetor cleaner will remove any dirt or varnish buildup from the carburetor. Then while you have it apart give the float a shake to see if it has a leak.
If there is any liquid in the float you will need to replace it.

John deer flooding out went engaging deck

If this is an older mower that has carburetor adjustments , turn the large needle valve counter clockwise 1/8 of a turn., and see if the mower runs with the deck engaged. If there are no adjustments on the carb. It may need need cleaning, and the gas filter may need to be changed. You can place 1/3 -1/2 can of carb & fuel system cleaner in the gas tank and run the mower. If this does not help, please forward info on the mower - Model #, serial #, and Model/ serial # of engine, which is usually on the ehgine shroud.

TOO MUCH GAS AT CARBURETOR

Remove the carb and undo the bottom inside you will find a float (it is called the float bowl) remove the pin holding the float in place and shake it if it sounds like it has fuel in it then replace it. If not try adjusting the float by bending it so that it rises faster and shuts off the fuel flow faster.

Carburetor floods

The two wires are connected to a fuel shut off valve, this will also be the float bowl securing bolt, it should have a nut up against the bowl so just unscrew the whole thing.

Very difficult to start, new battery, new starter Gas in the cylinder flows out when you remove the spark plug

Your engine is flooding due to the carburetor float and needle having a problem. Do not try to run you mower like this. The fuel gets in the oil, where it acts like a thinner removing oil from critical surfaces. Remove the carburetor, disassemble, inspect and correct the problem with the float and needle. Change the oil, put fuel in tank and monitor level, remove the spark plug, check fuel tank level, turn engine over several times to get fresh oil in place, reinstall spark plug, check fuel tank level (ensure stable level), if all is good, try starting.

I hope this helps.

Describe your 20 Hp 42"

The float an needle are stuck open causing the fuel to drain from the tank or be pumped by the fuel pump into the carburetor bowl, filling it and flooding the engine and filling up the air cleaner. You may even find that it has gone into the crank case sump contaminating the oil. Do not run until you have repaired the carburetor and changed the oil and if air filter got contaminated, that changed too.

I hope this is helpful for you.

Just replaced the blade. now when i pull the cord, gasoline spurts out of muffler

Hi,
Take out the spark plug, then pull the rope a half dozen times or so. Tap lightly on the bowl of the carburetor. Blow on the bottom of the spark plug to dry.
Put the plug back in. Give it a try.
When you had the mower up to remove the blade the float in the carburetor bowl may have stuck open flooding the engine with gas.
If this works you may want to change the oil as some gas probably got in your oil.
Good Luck,
Wayne

Ariens A173K22 self-propelled. Fill up before starting, Do not overfill won't start, air filter soaked and engine flooded. Remove filter and will grudgingly start. Ok after that. Why is engine...

Your engine is flooding because you probably have some debris under the inlet float needle valve causing the carburetor to flood as you described.
Sounds like you will need to clean the carburetor or replace your carburetor internal rubber parts like the diaphgram and O rings.
Be sure to use compressed air to blow out all the fuel and air passages.
Be careful when blowing out the passages, because there are sometimes small rubber type seats in the bottom of some of the passages.
Sometimes you can get by with priming the carburetor or using starting fluid and letting it run a few times like that and it will flush the gunk out of the jets, but most of the time you will need to rebuild the carburetor.
Keep in mind that the float for the carburetor must be level when you go to reassemble the carburetor or follow the instrucitons you get with the carburetor kit.
If the mower/weedeater is over a year old, then I also recommend that you buy and install a new carburetor repair kit, because the diaphragm will get hard and that will cause it to be hard to crank.
When you clean your carburetor and remove the jet screws, you will first need to lightly seat the jet screws.
But before you lightly seat the jet screws count the number of turns it takes to seat the jet screws from their original position.
Be sure to mark the turns down on a piece of paper.
That way when you put the jets back in, you know to lightly seat them first and then turn them back out to their orginal position before you started.

Lawn mower stays running on jumper cables but once disconnected it shuts down when choke is engaged

if it is already running and you "engage" the choke, you will flood the engine with too much gas and it will sputter and die. the only time you engage the choke is to start the engine when it is cold. if the mower dies when you remove jumper cables, and you leave the choke alone, you need to have someone look at your charging system.

Murray riding mower 12.5 hp briggs & stratton spitting oil & gas out of carb & muffler when trying to start

Drain oil... it is full of gasoline due to a bad float pin and rubber gromet in your carb. When your float pin and gromet fail, gas just keeps flowing into your carburetor, eventually flooding your motor with gas and oil mix.
