Hey chris , i wouldnt worry about the neutral light coming on when your shifting thru the gears on acceleration. If your light isnt working or you missing neutral , try adjusting your clutch. Then if that isnt the probably find your neutral switch connector and ground the terminals together and your light should pop on . If not replace the switch. Im not sure what gauge you have there might be bulb for the neutral light also .

SOURCE: When I shift from second gear to first, it just slips to neutral

You have a bent shift fork not engaging the slider gear properly into 1st gear. The engine will need to come out of the bike. Remove the top end, the flywheel and electrics, the clutch, shift mechanism and kick starter and a few other parts. THEN you are ready to split the gearbox to get to the crankshaft, gears and shift forks.

You will need an impact driver, flywheel puller, case splitter, torque wrench and factory service manual, plus the normal screwdriver, pliers, etc.. Alternate to the special tools is taking it to the dealer and say "Fix it". I normally tell people to take it to the shop just so they don't get into such an involved project and they have a knowing eye working on the engine.

SOURCE: gear disengaged on 2nd gear

You probably will not like the advice that comes with what I suspect is the answer to your question.

My friend, let this be a lesson for you ... keep your wheels on the ground. I think you have stripped second gear
and suspect this will be a very expensive lesson for you.
You have a 17 year old motorcycle, it needs more respect from you, not a beating.

SOURCE: engine dies when bike is put in gear..... won't

If I recall correctly, the VStar engage/disengage point cannot be adjusted in terms of where in the range of the lever it is, something is not disengaged correctly. This typically indicates that there is too much freeplay . Reduce the freeplay just a tad and see if it resolves the problem.
clutch cables stretch with use and the adjustment at the clutch lever must be made on occasion. If there is no more adjustment at the lever, then follow the cable down and see if another adjustment is available. If not, you'll need to remove the cover to the clutch basket and find the adjustment there.
Now, just another thought. Bikes that have correct freeplay, but want to clunk and creep, may have sticky clutch plates/tension springs. This can happen when the oil is old or the bike has been sitting for longer intervals (previous owner?), or simply stuff accumulated and stuck to the plates. Not the most likely thing with your mileage, but don't completely rule it out.

Hi,are you saying it wont pick up the other gears,if so it sounds like it could be the gearbox thats at falt, selectors or sincro damidged,
but the milege seems to low for that to happen unless bikes been thrashed.
lets me know what was wrong with it when you sorted it out please, all the best.

I would fix the clutch first and see if this improves things.
If it creeps this is why it wont select neutral.
The clutch basket can wear out as well as the clutch plates

Engine wont start but is turning over i believe. gear shifter broken and jammed in first or second gear.

Hi Alex Iam not too sure but I think this model had a neutral switch fitted that stopped the bike from starting in gear , and displayed a light on the clocks when the bike was in neutral .
If as you say the bike is jammed in first this is probably the cause
the jamming sounds abit more serious ?.. you may have bent the selectors and this will mean a gearnox stripdown , it is even possible you have damaged the lay shaft if the bike was travelling when you came off this would also mean a box strip down .
I dont think there is an easy answer to this one Alex loks like you will have to take the engine apart to fix this one ( one thing did strike me I had an old BSA that I slid on the gear shaft and did the same thing stuck in first turned out I had bent the gear shaft removal of the pedal and gentle tapping freed the gears off and I was able to use the bike again ? it may help I cant be sure be careful not to damage the case or the splines I used a small lump hammer and a block of 4x 4 against the shaft .. I also put a wedge behind the shaft to stop damaging the rear of the box housing ) hope this helps Regards vortash
