1993 Kawasaki 750R - Model M , charging issue - WEIRD !!!

I bought a new battery and let it charge for 6 hours. I put it in the bike and rode the bike. After about 20 mins the bike died. I tried to start it and the battery was dead. I charged the battery again and put a volt meter across the battery. It read 12.9. I put the battery back in the bike, started the bike, reved to 4000 rpm and the reading on the volt meter is 14.8 - the norm for this bike it 14.2 -14.8. At one point it went up to 15 volts. I rode the bike again, and again, the bike died. I called for my trailer. While I was waiting on the trailer (about 20 mins) i tried starting the bike it started right up !!!...It seems like something is getting to hot, then stops charging the battery and then drains the battery until its kills the battery. This is a second battery cause I thought I had a defective battery. Any ideas? Can I check the regulator/rectifier another way or off of the bike? What other things should i be looking for or at? Short somewhere???

I have tried another 30 amp fuse, but I will clean and re-crimp the fuse holder and see if that works. I will let you know.

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Initially, have you checked the 30 Amps main fuse and its holder clips? It would be integrated with the starter relay. The fuse or the fuse holder may have heat related problem(s) causing it to loose conductivity when hot.The fuse may require replacement even if it tests good and/or the fuse holder would need cleaning / crimping. To locate the starter relay (main fuse), follow the battery cable from the + terminal of the battery.

Please postback results.

Good luck and thank you for asking FixYa.

My battery died this morning when trying to start my kadasaki KLR650 in the cold. I hooked the charger up a few hours later, but still can get no charge. I rode this bike five days ago. I charged it at...

it should have done no harm providing that you connected the charger positive to positive and negative to negative
however if the battery has a bad cell , then charging it will achieve nothing as that bad cell takes all of the charge and does nothing
have the battery load tested , then have the charge circuit of the bike tested properly by a bike auto electrician

I recently bought a 2005 softail deluxe and was told before purchase the battery was going out so the seller put a new battery on before purchase. I rode the bike for approximately 3-5 days with no issues...

If you are buying a multitester also consider buying a small motorcycle battery charger. They make ones that have a remote charging cable that you put on the battery one time and then you have an easy way to connect the small charger up when the bike it sitting for long periods. This will keep the battery fully charged and ready to go when you are.
Some batteries are sold only partially charged and you need to bench charge them fully before running them on the bike. Depending on your bikes energy demands the battery may never fully charge up during regular use.
If you put the multitester on DC voltage check the battery to see what its resting charge state is.
If the battery is reading less than 10.6 volts its probably down too low the recharge itself using the bikes alternator. Charge it until its resting voltage is 12.0 volts. Then your bikes alternator can make enough juice at 14-15 volts to recharge the battery while its running.
Good luck and be careful.

1993 Kawasaki 750R - Charging issue - Weird!!!

i know this sounds silly ,but when you bought the battery had it been activated, new batterys are critical in their first charge and you cannot use a standare type automotve charger,if bought dry the battery needs to have the acid filled ,left to sit for at least 2 hours prior to charging, once it has sat for the 2 hrs with the acid in,the new battery will need to be charged with a "cteck"or similar type charger for at least 13 hrs before it can be put into normal service, what happened with yours i think is that sure you gave it a charge but it has only recieved a "surface charge"and will be usable for a very short time,it may recover for a brief period and go again untill the surface charge dissipates,(or in other words ..runs out of charge)best thing you can do with the battery is take it to a auto electrician and have the battery cycled and conditioned, this is not expensive to do and will give you piece of mind, after conditioning the battery shouldngive excellent service,i have the battery in my goldwing coditioned about every 12 months and i have the same battery that was in the bike when i bought the bike 8 years ago and still no electrical or battery problems(costs about $25 to get it done)once a year but that beats $280 for a new one...hope this helps

Battery help

The clicking noise you hear is the starter. THe bike has a solenoid and it could be bad. Did you charge the new battery? The new batteries are filled at the shop and handed to you and you are told that is fully charged in 20 mins. Not true. Take the battery and trickle charge it for 5 hours. It should then have a full charge and start right up. If you still hear the clicking. The starter or solenoid are bad. Check all the wiring to the battery. Make sure they arent cracked or frayed. Making a good connection and no crud on the end of the wires. IF the wire to the starter is corroded. Replace it! Dont just clean it up. The wiring could be corroded up where you cant see it and this is why the battery is not getting the full charge to the starter. Hope this helps you out. TOM

Electrical problem with my tre-k 1130

came out of the coffee shop went to start the bike and the battery didn't have enough power to turn over the motor....I pushed started it but it didn't want to stay running once I put it in gear. Last night charged the battery and today put it in the bike and it started right up....rode it for about 45 minutes waited for about half an hour before starting it up again and it started , no problem. I am thinking that maybe it is the voltage regulator or maybe the alternator....can anyone help me out with this? ,If you have a multimeter, you need to test the electrical output of the charging system. (Check the voltage of the battery when the bike is revving at about 2000 rpm) If you don't have a multimeter, the best thing to do probably is to take the bike to an Autozone or similar car place where they will test the battery and charging system for free,,,
