Hi, probably your gas tank float doesn't work. According to me cause of the problem , some metal parts of gas tank float mechanism is stuck or the gas tank float is dislocated.

SOURCE: gas gauge reads empty but tank acts like it's full

I also have a 04 with a 1.8L. same problem. I took the fuel regulator off. It is a black box behind the rear tire under car. It only has 2 bolts to take off. After that there is a couple of vent hoses from the tank going to this box. Unplug them and 1 electrical connection. The electrical connection and one vent is connected to a T connection on the box that you can unplug by twisting on the T. Take that T off and look inside where you unplugged the hose on this T. There is a spring and a little plunger inside this tube. The plunger gets stuck. I took a little screw driver and some PB blaster and worked that plunger back and forth a couple dozen times and it unfroze. Put it back together gassed up just fine. I did not look but I was told regulator can be replaced for 200$. But a can of blaster is cheaper.

SOURCE: fuel gauge

hi, try to check if the fuse is ok, if not then you must have some problem on your fuel sending unit, you may need to replace it for it may be faulty, it happens when its too old, hope this helps.

SOURCE: fuel gauge doesn't work. went on vacation

Hit the top of the dash with your hand. if not you will have to check the wiring before you can tell if it is the fuel gauge or sender in the tank. This is not a commen problem.

Town and Country Van running out of gas and guage says half a tank what could be the problem?

If your fuel gauge is showing you in accurate readings this is normal to all vehicles that are not used to fill-up gas full regularly but sometimes the cause of the inacuracy is due to faulty float valve in the gas tank you need to replace it

Dash gas gauge stops showing proper gas level once it hits half a tank. Then gauge will fluctuate between empty (light will come on), full and anywhere in between but seems fine from full tank to half

If the trouble with the gauge started after you worked on it then you likely damaged or created a restriction to the movement of the sending unit. You will have to remove the tank and double-check your work.

I just replaced the fuel pump in my 1996 explorer and fuel filter and put 5 gals of gas back in the tank now the fuel guage is registering full and will not work

Eewww. That's not good. And you're not going to like what I say. I think you bent the fuel gauge sender unit, or misaligned something when you put it back in tank. Try unplugging the connector and plugging it back in. See if that helps the gauge to register right. Here's a quick check to see if your dash gauge is working right: Unplug connector again at tank and use a jumper wire to ground the dash gauge sender wire. With key turned to on and the fuel gauge wire grounded, the gauge should jump up to half or full. If it does, there's a problem with your sender unit in the tank.

My 97 S-10 Blazer fuel guage wont work

Likely, it's the sender unit in the tank. To check wiring and your dash gauge, you can pull apart the connector at the fuel tank, find the wire for the gauge sender unit (its color coded-I dont kinow what the one for your car would be), and on the harness side(the one going to front of vehicle) use a jumper wire and ground that wire to the car frame(get me? you want to ground the wire going to your dash gauge)-with key on, your gauge working properly will move up to half-way or even full. That tells you your dash gauge is working and your wiring to gauge is good. If gauge doesn't move when grounded(double check for a good ground), then your dash gauge may be bad.

My fuel gauge stops working once it hits a half tank whats the problem

sounds like the fuel pump assembly as a whole unit, or could be a malfunction in the cluster.

Fuel gauge on 1993 Dodge Dakota V8

Definitely the gauge can be changed, provided the float in the fuel tank is OK, i.e. no leaks. This float connects to a potentiometer which records the current flowing thru it and displays it in the gauge. So before replacing the gauge measure the current and match that against the quantity of fuel in the tank...............sodeep

Problem with fuel guage on my 1994 Mercedez Benz C180

There is no gauge in the fuel tank, the fuel sending unit is, that sends the signal to the fuel gauge in the dash to show how much is in the tank. Apparently, the sending unit is shot.

Fuel gauge stuck on half full

I can tell you almost for certain your fuel level sending unit is bad, I have been able to fix them though. It requires removing the gas tank and then the fuel pump. You can if your inclined, bend the brushes on the small circuit board over more so they will make better contact on to it. Other wise its a new fuel pump assembly, check all plugs and wiring by unpluging and repluging them to insure no bad connect. It is possible it could be the guage itself, but in thirty years of fixing cars never had a bad guage

If you remove the sending unit in the gas tank, move it manually by hand as u saw done earlier, the gauge on the dash should also move. As long as the sending unit in the tank isn't 'stuck' at the half full level, the gauge should register empty to full as it moves. To be honest, I'm not sure if I would bother taking the sending unit out. 1st, u must be very careful not to blow yourself up when working on the gas tank (no sparks, etc), all u really need to do is fill up your car, see how many miles a tank of gas will go (carry a can of gas with u to see how many miles before u run out). If it's 350 miles, just set the trip gauge to zero every time u fill up, and get gas every 300 miles so u don't run out. If the sending unit moves freely, everything (wiring ) is connected properly, then it probably is the fuel gauge. good luck!
