SOURCE: kawasai z750, keeps blowing main fuse

Hi,

To my knowledge, there are no onboard electrical/electronic components capable of shorting and blowing the fuse with out blowing any of the secondary fuse. The main fuse could possibly blow due to a short in the wiring or an exposed/frayed wire touching the body. The three most likely areas would be:

  • wire harness leading to the regulator;
  • wire harness leading to the fusebox; and/or
  • wire harness leading to the ignition switch.
Just a start, do postback how things turned up or should you need additional information. Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa.

SOURCE: blows ignition fuse when key is turned on

Look for a grounded wire on the ignition switch or a break in the wiring leading to the fuse. Wiring system on motorcycles are a close system with only the battery being grounded to the frame. Any loose connections or breaks in the wires that will allow the current to jump to the frame with cause you tons of fun.

SOURCE: accessory fuse keeps blowing, headlight not working

I know this sounds aomewhat general, however please give the following some thought:
Check your relays, if you have an aftermarket horn you may have a different relay. To troubleshoot unplug your headlight, unplug your horn, etc.. Turn your ignition switch to accessory only. See if the fuse pops. If it does unplug whatever added accessories you may have still have plugged in. Once you can get the fuse to stop popping, turn the ignition switch to on. Then one at a time plug you accessory, headlight, etc. back in. When you find what pops the fuse, unplug that item, start plugging in the other items, if the fuse has not popped you have potentially isolated the circuit causing the issue. Now check the wiring for loose connections, bad ground, and CHECK the relay if that item has one. Hope this helps,

JP

Can a bad voltage regulator cause the main 30 amp fuse to blow?

Usually a bad regulator will only cause problems with charging...
Sounds like you've got a short somewhere in the wiring...I'd start by checking the ignition switch wiring and the connections going into the fuse box.

Left key in ignition overnight, had to jump start bike. now the main fuse keeps blowing

You haven't said what model or year of kawasaki.

Some newer bikes aren't supposed to be jump started. Take the battery off the bike, replace the fuse, charge the battery on a proper charger overnight (as opposed to a battery conditioner like optimate). It should now start fine and not blow the fuse.

If that doesn't sort it, the dealer will need to reset something.

Are you sure you have conected the battary up the correct polarity, red cable to the positive terminal, black to the negative, there will be a main fuse somewhere behind the dash board, or on a low tention wire conected to the battary.

My toshiba wont always charge properly, itll say "plugged in but not charging" and then i plug out the cord and then plug it back in and it will charge for a few secs then stop. thanks

Try checking the power management settings in control panel.
& if there all set correctly, Then take the battery out & plug in the charger. It should run on it's own.
If it doesn't the chargers gone, but if it does run then put the battery back in whilst it's still on. If still no joy then wiggle & bend the cable from top to bottom & all the joints to check for breaks or bad connections, But leave the laptop switched on so that you can hear it bleep every time you hit a fault.
GOOD LUCK if you get stuck contact me for free advice...

Melting tube fuses

hi budd as its custom you may have the wrong size wire and to small of a amp try a bigger wire as the motor seems to be pulling to many amps for that cable and fuse

Cagiva solenoid

1. Battery Voltage. - Key off: between 12 - 13VDC.
2. Key off Amp Draw - At the main fuse: < (less than) 1ADC

3. Key on Amp Draw - At the main fuse: Results will vary because of different loads.
*Note - DO NOT START THE BIKE WITH YOUR METER IN PLACE OF THE MAIN FUSE! Also, if you can not access the main fuse, put your positive meter lead on the red wire at the solenoid, and put your negative meter lead on the positive battery lead. This way you will be able to get your amperage readings AND let you start the bike without blowing your fuse.* Charging amperage should be at least 1 ADC

4. Break even speed - The RPM in which the charging voltage at the battery turns positive - Should be before Idle

5. Charging voltage at the battery - Between 13 - 15 VDC.

hope the above details help.thanks for using fixya.

Burgman 250 will not start

Ck fuses and wire connections first. If no problem seen, get bike running and disconnect the ground cable @ battery. If bike dies the problem generally is in the stator or regulator assembly not keeping battery charged. Bike will run untill the battery is too low to keep the ignition system energized and the bike will die. If it continues running w/the ground disconnected, the battery could have a dead cell which will drain the battery in a very short time whether it is running or not.
