Take plug out and rotate the motor in gear, place a screw driver in the pot and feel it moveing up n down stop when it hits the top, can use a spanner on the crank nut

Take out the spark plug and use a spanner on the end of the crank to gently turn the motor whilst using a screw driver or similar to feel as the piston comes to TDC. I always look around crank area as often once done manufacturers marks become obvious. Be very careful not to get the screw driver caught or turn too fast or with force as you could damage piston.
before you go taking your head off check that magneto and flywheel are both okay and the key way it sits on isnt flogged out.if thats not your problem if you take the rocket cover off you will expose your timing chain now this chain is marked with a line usually which is your timing mark. the top cog your chain sits on also has a mark if you can get your piston top dead center and line both marks up while at top dead center it should be fine. hope this helps thanks ladjr2
Top dead center and bottom dead center also known as ( TDC) and (BDC) Are two different positions of the piston while an engine is running. TDC is where the piston is as high as it can go in the cylinder and BDC is as low as the piston can go in the cylinder.
Turn the motor to top dead center and ck the timming marks to make sure you are at the tdc mark it will be the third mark on the fly wheel in the direction rotation of motor or it will have a T mark. Ck to see if the valves keepers are loose or tight if they are tight turn the motor over 360 and ck again if they have play the use a .oo4 on the intake and a .oo6 on the exhaust then ck the compression and see what you get it's should be easy you should have a little bit of drag on the gage but not to much
owww,,, was the bike running when the chain broke?? There is usually some valve to piston contact when this happens - BENT valves will NOT SEAT or SEAL!! Time to disassemble the top end!! Especially if you heard noises coming from the engine when it broke? You need to set the piston at TDC (Top Dead Center) and like the cam up with the marks on the head and cam chain gear,---- Make sure the timing marks on the flywheel are lining up..if not rotate the engine another 360 degrees until they do before starting this..You MUST CHECK THE COMPRESSION before attempting to start this engine.
