Thanks, the stator magnet turns counterclockwise without the engine, but it will turn the engine clockwise.

Typically the flywheel is keyed to the crankshaft and cannot move without rotating the engine also. If the key is sheared then the flywheel can move without moving the crankshaft. To check this the flywheel needs to be removed and replace the key. Of course the reason for shearing of the key needs to be corrected before the problem is fixed.

Testimonial: "Thanks 'I checked flywheel and I see the cam turning also. It is sluggish to turnover, I ordered another starter, ATV is in correct timing marks.maybe just a bad starter."

How to take the flywheel off with the engine still in

You will need to remove the transmission or transaxle first and then you can remove the flywheel. You do not state model of car so I cannot give more detailed answer than that
tip

Another ways to check the engine compression

Remove the spark plug and ground the plug wire on the engine.Seal off the spark plug hole with your thumb.Operate the starter. If the compression pressure blows your thumb of the hole, the compression is adequate for the engine to run.

With the spark plug in place remove the cooling shroud/recoil starter mechanism and spin the flywheel counterclockwise. The flywheel should change direction sharply,if so the compression is adequate for the engine to run.

Craftsman Tiller 917.298560 pull cord will not move but rewind starter is ok when removed from the engine. Flywheel will not move when rewind starter is off. It worked one minute but not the next or after....

The Flywheel or the piston may not be frozen up, unless it ran without much oil to the cylinder. After not being used for a while it may have locked itself in place by hitting the old dry spot in the cylinder. Remove the spark plug and spray some lite oil like wd-40 into the cylinder and move the flywheel by hand back and forth until it starts moving freely again. Also would be a good idea to change the old oil. When oil sits up it can collect moisture and cause dilution of the oil and score the cylinder walls at start up and damage the engine. If you cannot move the flywheel by hand, try using a strap wrench. Also a good idea to wear gloves while doing this procedure.

How do you remove a flywheel, 24-025-04-S, without a flywheel puller. I believe the stator shattered under the flywheel. i don't have a flywheel puller.

support engine weight below flywheel, with a center punch tap crank, after soaking with a penetrating oil.

Ive just replaced clutch assembly and machined flywheel surface, andreplaced worn fork on a 1999 leganza 2.0L. it had disengement probs . still wont clear enough to engage gears! do these have problems...

If you machined the flywheel and assembled the clutch without placing a shim between the flywheel and the engine crank shaft, this is most likely what your problem is. If you took 30 thousanths of an inch off of the flywheel, this could move the pressure plate in toward the engine just far enough that the throw-out bearing cannot get enough travel to disengage the clutch. You need to take it back apart and put a 30 thousanth flywheel shim in it. (or 40 thousanth, 50 thousanth, etc. depending on how much was taken off of the flywheel.) See the picture below of a flywheel shim. This is an example...one that will fit your car may look a little different.

Is the harmonic damper bolt turn counterclockwise to remove on a 1994 civic 4 cylinder

Yes. Many mechanics will remove the inspection cover on the trans, or take the starter out to be able to wedge a wood block or a breaker bar into the flywheel teeth to hold the engine still while breaking the bolt loose.

Of course, it helps to have someone helping.

good luck

Starter grinding

You must take off the right hand engine cover and after unscrewing CLOCKWISE the main bolt that holds the flywheel you need a special KTM puller to pull out the stator rotor (flywheel).Behind that there is a group of parts that you should replace. The large sprocket, the clutch system that the large sprocket is into (special formed balls in a spring) and the hub that is screwed behind the flywheel.Use OEM parts (even for the 5mm allen screws if they need to be renewed).Use 18Nm for those allen screws adding locking nut adhesive on their threads (Locktite).
Work backwords to reinstall it and the flywheel's main bolt uses 120Nm of torque to tight it up on the crankshaft COUNTERCLOCKWISE.Use new gasket for the engine case and 12Nm for the bolts.

I'm not sure if the nut comes off turning clockwise or counter-clock wise? Is there a special tool that you use to hold the fly wheel in place? Briggs and Stratton engine model number 445777, type #D129-E1

The flywheel nut should come off counterclockwise. Hold the flywheel with a good pry bar against some solid so as not to damage anything. After that is off the flywheel will be on there real tight. Let me know if you haven't done it before , I can help you there also.

The motor is hrd does not move smooth when I start it. and i feel it hard to move.

I suggest that you check the teeth on the flywheel and the starter bendix (drive clutch with gear on it to turn the flywheel). It is difficult to diagnose this without actually seeing the vehicle. It could be that you could get by with changing the starter. Another thing to look at is the flywheel and bolts. It is possible that it is cracked. If that be the case, either the transmission will have to be pulled or the engine.
Hopefully it won't come to that. The longer you try to use it laike that, the worse and more expensive it is going to be to repair it.
Good Luck with it.
