2002 buell blast is running rough - missing - backfiring

This bike has been to the Harley Davidson shop 3 times. This is the stuff they said they did.

Replaced Manifold coupler
Fuel flushed
Carburetor cleaned & adjusted
Timing adjusted
New battery
Automatic enricher replaced
Ignition module replaced
Spark plug & spark plug wire replaced

And after all that the bike still
Misses
Backfires
Runs rough

Runs better once warm but still will backfire now and then. And has die on me a few time while I was on the freeway.

what should i do to give a better description so someone can help me find the problem with this bike.

  • mike_krueger Jul 07, 2009

The lights stay on when the bike dies.

What results do you hope for here? Obviously you're going to go back to the shop and ask for a refund, then take the bike to a different shop and have them fix it. No one can diagnose your problem from your description.

IT'S NORMAL!!! MINE DOES THE SAME THING! NEEDS MORE AIRFLOW--FIGURE OUT HOW TO ACCOMPLISH THIS, POST IT WHEN IT WORKS SO I CAN DO IT TOO, LOL! IF I GET IT FIRST, I'LL LET YA KNOW-JUST KEEP YOUR EARS TURNED ON THE FREEWAYS SO YOUR HAND KEEPS YOUR IDLE UP. GOOD LUCK!!

Wow, my 2002 blast is doing the same thing, or at least it was untill it blew a hole through the exhaust and quit running all together. Time for a sportster.

It sounds like that should of cured the problem however if they didn't adjust the tps after they replaced the enhicher then that could be the problem also remind them to adjust after two minutes so enricher has shut off

Hard to say w/ seeing it; it does sound as if they replaced everything w/o really finding the problem first; try better fuel and clean petcock; when dies is it electrical( all lights out) or does it sputter and choke off? sorry; I know it can be frustrating check all wiring under seat looking for loose or broken connectors or ground wires

check coil wiring/connection; double check spark plug/ gap; check vacuum hoses for leaks; this is really tricky; intermittent "ghosts" are hard enough to diagnose w/ the bike on a lift let alone in a "chat room". how does it start? Ie:run it over and starts right up? Just thought of this- check all your safety devices: they put clutch interlock/ kickstand etc on the blasts; if it is dying while riding possibly a safety switch is malfunctioning somehow; I'm just guessing but right now your problem is not common. I was asking about lighting / choking when it dies to figure if it was electrical or fuel related. how many miles on it and hard or "nice"; You have me intrigued and since you are actually posting responses I will keep racking my brain; my wife has an 03 blast in the garage and I'm about to tear that down to duplicate your headaches so any info is helpful to diagnose problem; even though it may seem mundane or irrelevant to you. Good luck and I'll talk to you later...T

alright, I've got a few more questions to clarify your problems...Is it a California model? when the bike stalls on the highway, if you crack the gas cap does it sound like air rushing in? have you investigated air intake leaks? what exactly did they do to your carb(rebuild, reset float level, change jets or what)? where was work done?- a hd dealership w/ Buell support or some m/c shop that "fixes" everything? anybody can change parts; a real tech finds and remedies problems. ...T

How do i check the gear oil level

Simple - get a drain pan. Pull the drain plug on the left side of the bike under the shifter and let everything out. Check what is there. Put the plug back in and open the clutch inspection cover behind the LEFT foot pedal. POUR IN A QUART OF NEW HARLEY DAVIDSON PRIMARY OIL. YES, IT TAKES A SPECIAL OIL. Don't put the old stuff back in.

Where can I find an ignition coil for a 2001 Buell Blast?

Check the ignition module behind the round plastic cover on the right side of the engine. Pull the cover off - the module has a small red led that flashes when the bike is cranked or runs. if it doesn't flash either the fuse for it is bad or the module is bad. I would check this first as it is a EASY test and takes 2 minutes to do. If you need parts - Harley Davidson still sells both the coil and the module.

Hi i have bought a new Buell 2009 model bike from Harley Davidson in Queensland Australia, I have a really rough runing engin, i took the bike back to Harley Dealership and thay could not fix the problem...

I have had two Buell Ulysses from a Brisbane Harley Dealer and have put a total of 80 000km on the two of them. I can tell you that if you have an after-market exhaust installed (EG Jardine, etc) then surging and backfires are the name of the game. Power Commander and other replacement EFCs are not the answer either (because no proper solution was in place before they stopped Buell's production). I do run a Jardine on my current model and putting in the noise limiter has made for smoother running. Also...Buell's are subect to vibration in the bars. I installed anti-vibration weights in the bar-ends and voila'...no vibration...just great as I can now see my speedometer...LOL. I hope any of this is of some use to you. I LOVE my Buell. I've been riding over 50yrs, I've owned dozens of bikes, motorcycles are my daily ride and this is my favourite machine (followed close behind by my Hayabusa).
