2013 Honda Activa will not idle when warm

Honda Activa(2013) - engine stops at idle after engine warms up after running for about 10 minutes; in cold engine no problem with idle speed. When cold engine the engine starts in one kick-start(with choke) and idle speed is good. After about 5~10 minutes the idle speed starts dropping and finally the engine stops at idle. To prevent engine stopping have to hold the throttle higher than idle- also at this stage, the engine refuses to start on kick-start and can start only on self with the throttle held high.

Initially, a few possibilities you may want to check/explore:

  • stale gasoline;
  • clogged fuel filter (inside the tank above the fuel shutoff valve;
  • clogged, bocked, varnished, gummed carbs, jets, air pin holes;
  • stuffed air filter/box;
  • vacuum leak (rubber coupling, manifold side);
  • air leak (airbox base assembly seated/fitted on the carbs.
Basically, a general cleanup of the fuel lines, tank and the carbs. Sitting for some time tends to leave varnish like coating on most parts.

my guess is that its not the carb at all but it might be the gas line in side the tank is cloged to the point whare you need to have it on choke in order to pull enough gas to the carb which would be the reason for it not wanting to come back down to idle quickly or it could be the fuel pump is cloged and if you tried that already than the fuel adjustment is way off and will need to be adjusted while a friend or family is keepin it running

SOURCE: My XV125 will only run on tick-over until warm....

ALWAYS have a fire extinguisher on hand when working on carburetors.
Remove the water trap bowl at the bottom of the petcock, (gas valve). Is there any water or trash in the bowl? Drain a cup of gas from the tank. Is there any water or trash in the cup? Dump it, clean it and re-mount it, ( not all bikes have a water trap bowl ).

Drain the carburetor. There should be a screw on the lower side of the carb float bowl. Remove the screw then replace it after the fuel drains. Turn the gas back on and wait a minute for the carb to fill with gas. Install a new stock NGK spark plug and try to start the engine. If the bike doesn't start and run properly then shut off the gas and remove the carburetor from the engine.

Remove the float bowl and clean the entire carb with a spray carb cleaner from the auto parts store. Wear protective goggles to avoid getting spray in your eyes. Spray into all the little airways and fittings in the carb. Remove the idle screw and the air screw on the outside throat of the
carb and spray into the screw holes as well.

Be sure to put these two screws back in the same hole they came out of. IMPORTANT > do not tighten these two adjusters down. Only screw these in until they LIGHTLY seat. Now turn each adjuster one and one half turns outward. Before putting the slide back in the throat of the carb, move the clip on the jet needle one notch lower. Put the rest of the
carb back together, clean the air filter and install the carb. Let the float bowl fill then start the engine. This process should get you back on the road.

1. First thing is when was the last time you had your valves adjusted
2. On cold start up twist about 15 times on your throttle, as you do that the accelerator pump in carb will shot gas in cylinder, I have a 2003 yx426 & 2005 yz450 have to do to both of them when cold out to get started

More than likely, the idle (pilot) jet is partially clogged. This is common when it will idle fine with the choke on, but won't idle without it. Sometimes a fuel treatment will clean the carburator, but not usually successful in cleaning the idle jet. Usually it requires removing the carburator bowl and and cleaning with the use of a gauge wire. The idle jet is usually recessed (next to the main jet).

A good video to show a generic carburator rebuild can be found at this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=exa467_eoXw The guy goes through a pretty detailed description while going throught the process. The carburator will not look exactly like yours, but it will be similar internally.

Don't drive the vehicle until you get the vehicle checked. Running a engine that is overheating can do serious damage. By serious I also mean Very expensive!
Did you replace the thermostat in the cooling system when you replaced the coolant.
Try this simple test.
**Note** You need to put your hands near the engine when it is running. BE CAREFUL you do not touch Moving or Hot parts of the engine.
With the engine Cold, open the bonnet and find the very large black hose going to the top corner of the radiator. -Carefully touch the hose. It should be cold. Start the engine and let it idle for 5 minutes.
-CAREFULLY touch the large hose. It should be starting to get warm. Let it idle for another 5 minutes.
-Again CAREFULLY touch the large hose. It should be HOT to the touch.
If the hose does not heat up the thermostat could be faulty.
-Carefully touch the hose. It should be cold. Start the engine and let it idle for 5 minutes.
-CAREFULLY touch the large hose. It should be starting to get warm. Let it idle for another 5 minutes.
-Again CAREFULLY touch the large hose. It should be HOT to the touch. If the hose does not heat up the thermostat could be faulty.

When running is the idle smooth or up and down?
Is the chock operating, or adjusted after the motor gets warm?
Is the carburetor needle adjusted after the engine idles to warm as it should be to be set correctly.
Are you blowing snow when it dies or at idle?

There's an idle adjustment screw. The bike runs faster when cold because the fuel\air adjustment is richer on a cold engine. When the bike warms up, the fuel becomes more lean in mixture because the heat causes the fuel to expand, i.e., less molecules of fuel to the firing sequence of the piston. When the bike is warmed up, after say ten minutes, the heat causes a leaner mixture, so adjust the idle on a hot engine (about 1000 rpm more or less). The bike will idle faster when cold, then drop rpm's as the engine warms up. Good luck

Have a 1989 Honda Accord LX and my idle after warmed up, every time I come to a stop my car dies. I've changed plugs, set idle speed a number of times, it will run good for a few days and then it's right...

If you can keep the engine running with your foot on the gas at a stop it is likely to be the Idle control valve. Older Hondas' have 2 valves. fast idle control (which is prone to cause fast, or surging idle due to vacuum leakage) and the Idle control that takes over from the cold idle control once warmed up. They are located at the throttle butterfly assembly.
