If the engine is warm it should be pushed in, or turned down.
If the engine is cold it should be pulled out, or turned up.

14" CRT 3.5 hp tiller,

Make sure your Air cleaner is not obstructed. Clean it!
Check your spark plug for the proper gap. Adjust your
LOW speed throttle screw. It may not be getting enough fuel flow. Check your fuel filter screen (Inside your gas tank). Good Luck

Trimmer will only run in choke position

You have a few possibilities. Make sure you have good fresh gas in the tank. You're not getting enough gas, so choking helps get more gas than air, making it run better. Could be the carb diaphram (not very expensive if you replace yourself), when they get old they don't perform like they should. Could be the filter in the gas tank is bad, plugged. Also might be just an easy adjustment on the carb Low, and High speed screws. The choke has three positions, full choke, partial choke, and no choke, which means run position.

Stalling out

Generally with two cycle engine as soon as the engine starts the choke needs to be moved to the off or open position. Some chokes have a middle position that lets the motor run until it is warm enough to move the choke into the open position. In other words weather it is a two or four cycle engine the choke is used only to start the engine. If you unit is newer and still does not run well with the choke in the open position, you may need to adjust the hi-speed circuit to a richer one.

Choke wont stay in the closed position for starting

Been a while since I saw a Jonsered but I think if you bend the choke linkage a little that it will stay in the choke position.

1985 cutlass oldsmobile with 305 engine and 4bl carburator. hard to start. I noticed that when the pedal is completely push down and released the choke plate does not completely sshut. As the key is turn to...

Usually, there is a way to adjust the position of the choke. I've seen two ways:
1) The electric assist might be able to be rotated or re-positioned by loosening its screws.
2) The choke positioning lever can be bent or extended by straightening it with pliers to fully close the choke plate.
