The ignition switch and kill switch on my 1993 DR doesn't work

The ignition switch and kill switch on my 1993 DR 650 quits working sometimes. The lights and tach will go off when you turn the bike off, but the bike keeps running. This only happens sometimes. Sometimes it works perfectly. What can I look for?

Kill switch was turned off even keys off but ignition still cranking up on my vstar 650?

The Kill switch only kills the ignition feed. Normally to the coil.
You will find that the starter circuit still gets power. But the engine will not fire if the kill switch is on.

1983 yamaha xj 650 no spark already changed the cdi coil plugs wires and mag pick up what next?

  • Do you see spark? If not, check the side stand kill switch. It kills the engine so that you don’t start out with the side stand down. If broken or out of adjustment, it would kill the spark. Check for a broken wire at the side stand switch and coupler. Try moving the side stand kill switch by hand. If that doesn’t work then wire a jumper around the switch to bypass it.
  • Is the handlebar kill switch on? Is it shorted out?
  • Are you getting power to the coils?
  • Check the fuses. How good is the battery? Try a jump start from your car battery.
  • Check the operation of the ignition switch and all kill switches with a volt ohmmeter. Check the wiring harness. Did a wire come unplugged? Are all wires clean and with solid connections? Any abraded or pinched wires? Is the bike in neutral and the neutral light is lit up? If no neutral light, check the neutral switch and neutral switch wire on center or side casing. If still no spark, get CDI system and coils checked at the dealers shop.

The bike runs fine then it just quits running

There may be some water condensate accumulated in the gas tank. Remove the water trap bowl at the bottom of the petcock, (gas valve). Is there any water or trash in the bowl? Drain a cup of gas from the tank, ( not all bikes have a water trap bowl ). Install an in-line fuel filter. Drain the carbs

The problem could also be electrical. If the gas thing doesn't fix the problem then check the side stand kill switch (if there is one) on your bike. It kills the engine so that you don’t start out with the side stand down. If broken or out of adjustment, it could kill the spark at random times. Check for a broken or loose wire at the side stand switch and coupler. Try moving the kill switch by hand. If that doesn’t work then wire a jumper around the switch to bypass it. Check the fuses. Check the operation of the ignition switch and all kill switches with a volt ohmmeter.
