Sounds like the "Fingers" in the Gearbox are slightly out of line with that gear..... are all the other Gears working PERFECTLY or do you have a tiny problem with them as well????

If you do, then I suggest seeing a Gearbox Mechanic...... at he VERY WORST it could be a Gearbox Overhaul, but more than likely a bit easier...... maybe even one of the Linkages has slipped slightly.... but the Mechanic will be able to tell for sure.
Good Luck......

My signal light on my 1997 VW Cabrio will not work when brake pedal is pressed but when the brake light is not pressed signal light will work. What could the problem be.

sound like problem poor ground wire since brake lights and turn signal lights use same ground wire which is the brown wire.

1997 vw cabrio driver door does not turn on dome light. Passenger side works fine. How do I troubleshoot and fix?

Check the switch in the door-jam. Little black plunger that pushes against door when closed, you'll probably find your driver doors switch is stuck in/or broken.

Towable vehicle

sure just make sure its not in gear, the clutch not being engaged will make sure the wheels spining wont o any damage, if you want to be extra careful keep the clutch pedal depressed with a piece of wood wedged up against the seat

1998 VW Cabrio loud humming from what sounds like the transaxle

Have you checked that the noise is not tyre noise?
Interchange the wheels front to rear (or left to right) to see if it has any effect on the noise.

Only do the test below if the car is securely chocked so as not to move, take great care not to contact moving parts!
Securely jack both the car drivewheels off the ground, then 'drive' the vehicle through through the problem drive speed/gears while listening for the noise. If the noise occurs under these circumstances you may be able to further localise the source by listening (very carefully!)with a short hose pipe held to the ear.

How do I disalarm my 1997 VW Cabrio Alarm?

I have a similiar problem occasionally. In my 97 vw, it usually happens when the battery terminals are loose. I just take them off, clean them and reconnect and the problem goes away for several months.
