I have a 1998 triumph sprint 900cc. It has been running all the time with the temperature gauge just off the C mark. The other day the gauge went to half way when in built up area but dropped down to normal again on the open road when I could get up a bit of speed for the air to do its job, when I slow down or stop the temp goes up again to half way. It never goes past half way and the fan has kicked by then, but if I am stood still and rev the engine the gauge drops to C and back up again to half way when I stop revving. I have checked radiator for coolant and it is full, resevoir is topped up and oil is ok.

Halfway is actually normal in range for liquid cooled bikes. Gauge may have previously been faulty, but running at rest, fan will engage and engine will stay warm. As long as you're not near the red warning area, and your fluid level is OK, then you're in optimum temperature range. Hope that helps.

Thanks, that's cleared that problem and put my mind at rest.

Cooling fan on my 2010 sprint st won't switch off even though the tempture gauge is at correct level

Im pretty sure the fan switch on these use a switched earth ,so it's either the fan switch that's faulty and going to earth even when it's cold or there is a part of the wire that goes to the fan from the fan switch that is getting an earth possibly from chafing on the frame.I would suggest disconnecting the fan switch firstly to see if the fan shuts off.

I have a Triumph sprint st 2001. Pressure builds up in the gas tank and blows out forcefully when I open it.

Check that breather pipes are not blocked. There are two pipes that thread through the frame to near the centre stand. Can become blocked with road 'crud'.

Loud valve rattle sound, guy i got bike from said this is normal on the 900cc sprint triumph is this true

Well my old trumpet sounded like a cuttlery draw being emptied into a tin bucket, lol... yes they DO indeed make a racket, however it shouldn't be TOO loud? As long as it sounds rhythmical and even and there are no "Tinny" (like hitting an empty tin) slapping sounds, then you should be all good.

It wouldn't hurt anything though, to give the Valves a good going over, and "set" them again. this will at least give you piece of mind, that nothing is indeed wrong. I have also found that using a synthetic oil that gets/stays? slightly thicker at running temperature, this too, helps quieten it down too. Also check the valve springs, rocker side play too, maybe it needs a shim? sometimes the springs weaken and cause a louder noise, just replace them if this is suspected. Remember though that the Triumph is a "Loose" motor and they do indeed make a racket, often until they heat up and tolerances tighten, and then it should all purrr.....

Weird problem just started. Noticed the other day when I turned off the car, the fan continued to run for about another minute. Then, this morning, I was sitting in the car with it running and...

the first thing to try is turning the heater upto full heat(a/c off)if the temp guage goes down THEN CHANGE THE THERMOSTAT...(hot oil,if too hot, is thinner than the normal sae rating so the oil pressure will be lower.otherwise no real problem.

Will a faulty ignition switch stop the battary from charging.alternator,r/r,battary are all fine. Its a 955i triumph sprint st and the year is 1998

A guess. If you are running on "start" you might not be charging. But then, if you are running on "Start" I would suspect the starter would also be running. You didnt say this was the problem.

Is your battery going dead? Your alternator is putting out? Check the rectifier.
