2006 KX250F blowing oil out breather should I be concerned?

If the breather was open, it would be inevitable a certain amount of oil would be blown out of the breather so most breather designs incorporate an oil mist/flame trap.

The oil mist trap is sometimes a fairly simple baffle system usually integrated into the valve cover, sometimes a labyrinth trap and often a combination of baffle and metal gauze.
Usually these methods are efficient enough.

Insufficient oil changes or the use of low quality oil can cause the gauze to become partially blocked and this will result in oil not being separated from the crankcase emissions.

Other reasons could be increased piston blow-by or an abnormally high cylinder head oil level due to the drain-back holes being partially blocked.

Probbaly worn compression rings. Do a compression check warm and then a leakdown test of compression is low.

Check your oil level.

It does sound like a jetting issue if it is a carbureted machine. The atvs are jetted for a certain elevation when shipped from factory, any change in elevation and the main jet will need to be replaced. Your Polaris dealer will have information on what size jets they offer for different elevations. As for too much oil, it will push any excess oil into the air box through the crankcase breather. The oil change kits come with 2 quarts of oil, which will put the oil just over full on the dipstick. If it is less than 1/4 to 1/8 inch above the full mark there is no need for concern. 1/4 to half inch you may start noticing your quad running poorly. Your oil breather (on the side of the engine opposite the carb) may be malfunctioning/defective allowing the carb to **** oil from it. There is a breather tube that crosses over the top of the cylinder connecting the crankcase( oil) breather to the air filter housing. Check the oil level and the condition of the air filter and esp. the oil breather. It serves the same function as a PCV on a car engine.

There are two seals on the impeller pump. Replace the seals an the leak is stopped. Put in a new cover gasket as well.

hi 81 yamaha i am concerned about the fuel smell coming out with the oil. could be the carbs flooding filling your crankcase with fuel? if not it sounds like you have blow by which would cause your crank case to be slightly pressured. this is caused by worn piston rings. do not plug your crank vent. if you leave your vent open install small filter to stop dirt from entering jim

An overfull oil tank will do it. Even if not overfull just about all harley's will blow oil out the air filter. Unless there is a bunch of oil coming out, it's not a problem What I've found is that the air filter eventually gets saturated and then starts to leak through. The level in the oil tank doesn't seem to matter. If you change the air filter the problem goes away, until the new one gets saturated and then it starts all over again. My plan is to get a K&N air filter, which you can clean yourself and save having to buy a new air filter every 4,000 miles or so.
