What order and steps to take torquing head bolts on a 2004 crown Victoria 4.6l

A cylinder head must be perfectly flat in order for it to seal properly. Even if one appears OK, there is almost certainly some amount of distortion (or twist) present, especially if the engine has ever overheated. Some warped cylinder heads can be machined flat while others must be replaced. When replacing a cylinder head, it is critical to tighten the head bolts using the proper torque (tightness) specifications and pattern. For example, cylinder head bolts for a 2004 Ford Crown Victoria 4.6L must be tightened in six stages: 1.) 30 ft lbs, 2.) tighten 90 additional degrees, 3.) loosen 360 degrees, 4.) 30 ft lbs, 5.) tighten 90 additional degrees, and 6.) tighten additional 90 degrees. This process cannot be done to one bolt all at once either; every head bolt must experience stage 1 in a certain order (called a pattern) before moving on to stage 2. Tightening patterns always start from the center of the component and then either spiral or cross outwards. Using the Crown Victoria again for reference, the cylinder head bolts are laid out in two rows of six which I'll label as the intake (I) valve side and the (E) exhaust valve side. The bolts I'll number from 1-6 starting at the cam sprocket. The pattern starts at the center then crosses outward in this way: I3, E3, I2, E4, I4, E2, I1, E6, I6, E1. Can't find the torque head bolt pattern for a 1996 gmc sierra 5.7 vortex

The "pattern" for ANY cylinder head is pretty much the same...start with the bolts in the center of the head and work your way out to both ends.
Torquing the cylinder head on your 5.7L Vortec engine to manufacturer specifications requires the use of a "torque angle" gauge, as well as a traditional torque meter.

The torque specifications are as follows:

> Step 1: All bolts: 22 Ft Lbs (30 Nm.)
> Step 2: Short bolts: Additional 55 degrees; Medium bolts: Additional 65 degrees; Long bolts: Additional 75 degrees

If you are ambitious enough to do your own repairs, i can't say it enough! You really need to get a repair manual they have all the information you need to do everything. Torque specs. are different for every vehical. M anuals can be had from parts stores or online in the form of downloads. Down loads are ussualy less expensive. Good luck
