1. Shifter pawl improperly adjusted.
2. Shifter drum improperly adjusted or damaged.
3. Shifter engaging parts/dogs badly worn or rounded.

sounds like the gear selector plate plunger is worn or needs a new spring. on most engines a hollow screw @ 3/4" is accessible from under gear box, take it out and stretch the spring and retry to eliminate possibility.

Since your engine has a horizontal split in the crankcase, the top end does not need to be torn down. Yes, a bent shift fork is likely to be the problem. Before going too far, first check the index wheel and spring on the end of the shift drum. The mechanism may be loose and/or the spring broken. If you are lucky, you may not need to split the case.

Sounds like time for an oil change. Dirty, gritty oil is causing the clutch plates to grab. Change the oil filter along with the oil. Ride the bike a hundred miles or so then change the oil again. No new filter this time. Doing this should flush out the dirty oil.

The bike is 10 years old. It is probably time, (or past time), to replace the clutch cable. Most cables never seem to get lubricated. The oil and the cable are low cost items and you can't go wrong in doing the service.

Clutch discs are stuck, put the bike in gear, not running, pull in the clutch and push the bike back and forth to break the clutches loose. Once they break loose start the engine put the bike in gear, hold the front brake, and slip the clutch a little to remove any built up or stuck crud on the plates.

That definitely sounds like the clutch is shot,like it's not even there.Inspect both ends of your cable first before going to replace the clutch.Sometimes either end of the cable will fray and pop off the little bead stopper.It also could just need re-adjusting at the clutch end.If you are up around 70-80K miles,probably the clutch though.Good luck.

bad shift linkage.? ever try shift it with no shift lever. to prove that? (ask)
bad 1'st gear dogs. !
bad bearing near 1st gear, causing it to bounce and jump out.
bad synchro, blocker, hub that dogs to 1st.
shift rail dentent balls failing , springs on balls, or plug fell out.

the blocker and dogs, hold the gear,
the box is constant mesh box, so gears never shift.
on the dogs lock up . (and effects a shift)
if you need a photo of that action or video that too is easy.

1st gear has the gross effect of putting huge gear spreading actions
from top 1st gear to bottom cluster, they want to spread.
so any bearings that can allow that, there, will cause 1st to fail.
easy.

Nice bike, its a clutch problem, you might need to rebuild the clutch, beef it up a bit.

My 2003 ZX& jumps when I go from N to 1st, but if I start in 1st its ok


The clutch plates are dragging. This causes the clutch shaft to turn even when the bike is in neutral and the clutch is dis-engaged ( handle pulled in ). When the shift fork moves to engage 1st gear, the bike jumps due to the shaft rotation. When was the last oil change? Dirty oil can cause clutch drag. Also, are you using synthetic lubricants? Some of them can swell the cork on the friction plates and that swelling causes dragging. tombones49_286.gif

Ascertain that the bike least has an automatic gearing system. For example, automactic gears least requires clutch to propel bike. Once the bike is at slow motion captures an improvided speed with acceleration.

Bike jump out of 1st gear do you have any veiw of the gearbox setup?


i have no view of it but i can almost guarentee if its jumping out of gear all the time you have a problem with either your shift drum and or the shift forks. both require splitting the cases to replace. sorry bro.

My 1989 VT1100 jumps out of 3rd gear?


A broken gear will make a clicking noise each revolution of the gear. It will not cause the bike to slip out of gear. The problem sounds like a mildly bent shift fork.
