Pour the specified amount of recommended fork fluid into the fork tube. RECOMMENDED FORK FLUID:
Honda Ultra Cushion Oil 10W or equivalent FORK FLUID CAPACITY:
CBR650F/FA: 505 +- 2.5 cm3
(17.1 +- 0.08 US oz, 17.8 +- 0.09 Imp oz)
CB650F/FA: 482 +- 2.5 cm3
(16.3 +- 0.08 US oz, 17.0 +- 0.09 Imp oz)
Slowly pump the fork tube several times to remove any trapped air from the lower portion of the fork tube.
Compress the fork tube fully and measure the fluid level [1] from the top end of the fork tube. [1] FLUID LEVEL:
CBR650F/FA: 140 mm (5.5 in)
CB650F/FA: 128 mm (5.0 in)
Not brake fluid or Hydraulic oil ( oil weight is the issue) Drain forks ( bottom nipple) , remove top bold , be careful it is pressurized by spring . Use the right tool otherwise will damage bolt and your face.
Front forks should be sealed properly, fork seal should be intact, no water or brake fluid in them. Right amount of fork fluid is imperative along with oil weight specification ( check manual and appropriate oil weight for your bike), wrong oil and amount can otherwise damage your forks.
There may have been some confusion with the dealers advice. Brake fluid is used in the hydraulic clutch master , its called fluid cause its not a oil , and has a high boiling point Fork oil is for forks.it is a hydraulic oil, but an oil. Engine oil is for engines that the clutch also runs in.
hi, the fork oil level on an 2002-2004 vfr 800 is measured by air gap, with the forks fully compressed with the springs fitted, the air gap between the top of the fork and the oil level should measure 100mm. hope this helps, paul
Best is to use recommended OEM fork oil in the SAE10 or SAE15 range like Castrol Fork oil-10 or Fork oil-15, as number gets higher so is the viscocity and harder it on rebounding. When filing the fork do not over fill as it would make the fork response very stiff and blow out your seals. Good enough free advise?
I have 4 CBX's '79-2, '81 Turbo, & '82.
If you are using stock forks and not a real agressive rider, the ATF fluid works just fine. If you are using performance forks, have other internal modifications, or prefer the twisties, you can experiment with different weight oils. I believe that ATF is about 10W ...
