Hi, Anonymous for this scenario you will need your service manual that has all fastener torque specs -fluid capacities and a wiring diagram on the back pages, parts fiche, and owners manual if you can not find the best tool you ever bought for your Harley, despair not, for a mere zero $0 you can download another one.

SOURCE: I have a 2003 Fatboy that has an unusual idle.

Hello Jim...
Ok, the ignition is stock...
**Have you removed the ignition cover and looked at the ignition sensor? Is resin dripping down the plate? IF so, replace the sensor, but that may or may not rectify this problem.

**YOU CAN Also remove the sensor plate and clean/inspect the pickups on the back of the sensor plate. Be sure to mark/scribe the plate prior to removal so you are back to the same timing.

**Also, check to make sure the

I also need to ask, -does your bike BACKFIRE upon Acceleration?
-does it BACKFIRE upon Deceleration?

And your idle should be set at approx. 950 rpm.

Let me know if the above has been helpful Jim...

SOURCE: missfiring, banging on over run, starts after about 10 minutes

Weak or failing ignition coil and/or module will cause this, as will a flooding carb.

I had the same problem with my 04 1200C. It was a defective crank position sensor. replaced the sensor and no problems since.

If the bike is losing ALL power, I'm talking about dash lights, headlight, tail light, ALL lights, it's probably something tripping the main breaker. The breaker should be located either under the seat or behind the trianglular panel on the right side of the bike. I'd look for a frayed wire near the starter or around the rear cylinder due to the head in that area.

Good Luck

SOURCE: unable to get starter to

This is a possibility. The header says you're working on a 1979 XLH 1000cc Sportster. This is not a 250cc bike and it takes a good battery to start and engine of this size. I've never seen a CCA rating on the battery requirement in a service manual but it does say that the battery should be capable of at least 32 Ahr.

Good Luck

2001 Harley-Davidson FXSTD Softail Deuce. I put a brand new LED Halo headlight in, and every time I put my high beams on the fuse blows works fine on low beam!

Question edited for clarity.
Question moved from Cars and Trucks category.

Fine Harley Davidson, made in the good 'ole US of A. LED light made in China or Taiwan. Likely mis-wired, Main Beam shorts direct to ground. Or the ECM Doesn't understand that is going on, new LED Light and Control Module sending strange data signals back?

Adding LED Lights where none were there before is always a 'recipe for disaster' and one the manufacturers don't tell you "Works on ALL Vehicles" right?

And look, other Harley Owners have the same issue!

2007 Harley Davidson FXSTD Softail Deuce backfires a lot @

Hi, Anonymous and the usual suspects are:
1. Severely discharged or a damaged battery should have 12.5 volts or more and be able to pass a proper "LOAD" test if necessary, you may have a preliminary reading of 12.5 volts or more but little or zero amperage the battery is faulty and must be replaced, AGM batteries fail in this scenario more so than lead-acid batteries.
2. Check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
3. Faulty main circuit breaker and or connections.
4. Faulty ignition coil and or connections.
5. Faulty spark plug, oil or gas fouled, wrong heat range or service type, wrong gap, loose in the cylinder head, broken electrode or insulator.
6. Faulty spark plug cables, leaking or broken, internal damage check for spark leakage in the dark.
7. Faulty ignition module, switch, CKP, MAP, CMP, sensor and or any connector in the ignition circuit could have corroded, loose, or broken pins/sockets
8. Burnt exhaust valve or air leak in the exhaust system.
9. Improper valve clearance (too tight).
10. Check for generated diagnostic codes.

I have an 2004 deuce. im getting ready to put a chrome swing arm on. how hard is it to put on?

It's a pretty good job mainly due to the shocks that are underneath the bike. Also you have to pull the rear fender and tail light.

Good Luck
