SOURCE: 1982 Honda 650 nighthawk; jumps and stalls when put into gear.

this may help,it doesnt sound like the clutch is out of adjustment,it sounds like the clutch plates have become stuck together,(this happens quite a bit if the bike has been parked for a while..ie over winter)..to fix it get the bike moving, down a drive way or something..then just bang it into gear, then shift into the highest gear you can by shifting without the clutch, once you have a bit of pace on simply hold the clutch lever in and work the throttle on and off all the while holding the clutch lever in,the clutch should free itself fairly quickly and should be back to normall,a lot of older bikes are good at doing this..hope this helps

SOURCE: Stalling problem from neutral to first gear

I'm having the same issue with my 82 xs 400. Mine hasn't been sitting at all though. I rode it home two weeks ago. I put different bars on it, took off the mufflers and that's really about it. It starts and idles fine. If I put it on the stand and put it in gear, it will go through the gears with the wheel in the air spinning freely. Once I sit on it and put it in gear to go, it shuts off. I don't get it.

SOURCE: My bike stalls when i put it into gear. IT stalled

That is the sign of a bad Kick stand switch. Check the switch to be sure it is working properly.

93fzr 600 dies when its put into gear

Hi. Sounds like a problem with the switch on the side stand. The bike will have a switch fitted to the side stand that will cut the motor if you try to select a gear while the side stand is down.. (Assuming you have put the stand up before trying to move off).
It is simply an open/close switch. If you do not have means to test the switch, you can replicate both ways and try it by 1st disconnecting the wires from the switch and separating them. If still the same, short the 2wires together and try it then. Remember though that this is a safety feature and should be rectified immediately.

Alternatively, it could be your clutch that is not adjusted up enough to fully disengage drive when fully in. This in effect will stall the bike as you try to select a gear.. This will be noticeable by the bike jumping to a stall when gear is selected as opposed to the motor just cutting out.

Hope this helps.

When i put my 1987 Yamaha Virago in gear, it dies

Yamaha motorcycles of this vintage often have issues with their kickstand switch. This switch can be disabled by clipping the two wires that go into the switch and wiring them together--the kickstand switch is normally closed (letting current flow) when the stand is up; the switch is open when the kickstand is down.
This is more afield than your electrical concerns, but if the clutch plates have bonded together, the bike will stall when you put the bike into gear. The bike will start and idle fine, but basically, you don't have a working clutch, so the bike will stall out when you dump it into gear while at a standstill. You can test for this by starting the bike and having someone push the bike to get up to a little speed, then trying to shift into 2nd gear. If the bike lurches forward before stalling or keeps running, you have a clutch, not an electrical issue.
Folks sometimes get lucky, and working the clutch plates a few times will free up the sticking plates. I have had this problem with a mid-1970s vintage Honda that I don't ride very often. Eventually, the clutch plates free up and the bike is good to ride again.
Good luck!

I can start the bike but when I shift into low gear the bike stalls The bike runs perfect but will not run when put into gear.

Could it be that the bike stand is lowered there is a micro switch on these that kills the engine if you try put the bike in gear with the stand down

Got 2001 gsxr 600! bike starts in (N) but stalls out when put in gear?????

Check you side stand safety switch . Suzuki uses a system that kills the motor if you put it in gear with the side stand down or put the side stand down while it is in gear and it is running.

Stalling problem from neutral to first gear

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Initially, if the bike will be run without its own battery, the engine will really stall. This is because there will be no consumer for the voltage output other than the ignition system which will clamp down when the engine is revved and the voltage tends to go higher still.

Just a start, do postback how things turned up or should you need additional information. Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa.
