Clutch problem Hi, I have a 2006 BMW 1200 GS Adventure with 15200km on the clock. Last week my clutch started to release on its own. When I do normal riding its fine but as soon as I stop with the bike in first gear then after a few seconds the clutch starts to release by itself. What could be the problem? Thanks Morne.

The bike was services 5000km back. I dont think they change the clutch fluid with the first service.

Check the level of the clutch fluid in your resevoir, maybe a slow leak that is allowing the chutch to release. When was the last time the fluid was changed?

How would I verify or check the condition of the clutch (R1200GS) without taking the bike apaert? Can it be done? Would BMW's diagnostics software be able to determine this?

No, Diagnostic software cannot measure your clutch wear.

Remove the starter motor. You will be able to see a small section of the clutch and measure the thickness.

I noticed my clutch resovoir appears to be very low, if not empty. n reading the owner's manual, it states the fluid will "rise" as the clutch wears. Should I be able to see any fluid in the resovoir? What...

Do NOT add brake fluid to the clutch reservoir. The BMW clutch uses mineral hydraulic fluid which will not mix with brake fluid.

If your fluid is dropping, the chances are good that the slave cylinder is leaking. If not attended to soon, it will eventually contaminate the clutch, which will then also need to be replaced.

How do I replace the clutch of my 2007 1200 GS Adventure?

Is your clutch slipping?? Is there an oil leak between the engine/trans?

Replacing the clutch on a R1200GS is a bit involved unless you are very mechanically skilled. You basically split the bike in half to remove the transmission and gain access to the clutch. You need a means of supporting the front half of the bike under the engine while you remove the back half of the bike. Disconnect electrical harness from the rear, disconnect brake lines to the rear of the bike. remove throttle bodies etc. takes 2-3 hours for a skilled mechanic to get the clutch out, then 4-6 hours to put all back together again CORRECTLY!

If the clutch is NOT slipping, I would suggest removal of the starter motor on the lower LHS of the engine/ trans. and measurement of the clutch disc before you start the work of disassembly

I have a 1200 GS Adventure 2006 model, with no neutral light, gear positioning indicator, alternator and oil pressure indicator not working

Sounds like either a connector that serves the instruments, or a fuse. I would suspect a connector first off.

Clutch issue

If the plates look burned... you need to replace them. Have you been slipping your clutch overmuch? Or clutching up into wheelies? You'll also need to check to see if the metal discs have either warped or blued. [i]Best done by a shop.[/b]
