Motor blows fuse

"relay fuse pops instantly" First bike and ohh is it a joy, I left the light on and drained my battery down to nothing (new battery btw). I hooked up a charger to slow charge it, saw some sparks while connecting it but thought nothing of it(the battery was still on the bike and this most likely when the short happened). bought a new battery and when i turn the ignition -NOTHING, not one light as if the battery had no juice... so it must be a fuse.. one of the relay fuses is pop and every time i put a new one in it pops instantly.

There is a short in the system that is connected to that relay/fuse. Could also be melted wires if you tried to ever jump start it from a car, start position on a charger or jump start box. Jump starting a motorcycle should never be done. The gauge of wires on a motorcycle are much lighter than vehicles.
It is VERY rare but i have seen batteries that are reversed polarity. Check to make sure battery is 12v + when you test it. Not 12v -

Testimonial: "Thanks for the help! yes,I did put the charge box in the start positions for a little bit unfortunately. I really dont want to take the wire harness apart and open a can of worms I'm not ready for. im not well versed in the art of the volt ohm meter to pinpoint the short. If it was a nice easy clean break i could tape it up but, I looked online and I can get a new wire harness for $200 or a used one for $40. maybe going that route might be better but taking all the wires apart is going to have it own complication im sure. what do you think?"

    might be worth chasing back a little to see what damage was done before buying a harness and installing it. Might be a simple 2 inch wire splice to fix.

SOURCE: Keeps blowing ignition fuse

It sounds like your starter is taking to many amps to crank so I would change your starter.

Recheck the battery conections, undoing them clean them and then replace them, it may be that when you put the battery on charge if you didnot remove it from the bike you may have blown the main fuse, this is not the fuse located in the fuse box, it is the fuse located at the starter solenoide, follow the poss red wire from the battery to the solenoide, here you will find where the wires attach to the solenoide, a fuse located under a plastic cover, supplys ignition power, i trust you have done a thorough test on the battery. ? Thanks for the details, they do help. Is there a way you can disconnect different electrical circuits from the battery? Like Disconnect the lights, horn, or other components then start adding them back until you find the circuit or group of wires that causes the short. Because it seems you have a short somewhere, or something really putting a load on that 30 Amp fuse. So I'd break the circuits down to smaller pieces so that when you reconnect the lights, or starter, or whatever....that the fuse pops and you know the circuit causing the issue. You may have to open engine components like a magneto to isolate the circuits. But it shouldn't cost you anything except time.

Tried to install a headlight modulator in a 2011 Triumph Sprint GT. now I have no power whatsoever, battery drained replaced with a new battery and still no horn, lights, or power

It sounds like another fuse is blown or possibly a relay. Check all of them, if none are bad, then make sure your battery cables are good, use a test light to check them. Its more then likely a bad relay though. Good luck !

Main fuse location

The Main Fuse, is located behind the left hand side panel below the drivers seat. It is a 30 amp green fuse that is in the starter relay. Pulling out this fuse will cut all power to all parts of the bike.

In order to determine where your electrical drain is while your bike is off, replace the 30 amp main fuse back into the starter relay, and pull fuses from the fuse box, one at a time. Let your bike sit, for however long it takes to drain your battery, to determine what system is draining your battery.

For example, pull the fuse labeled for the lights and see if the battery drain goes away. If it does, then you will need to check all the wires that power the lights. If the drain persists, replace the fuse you removed and remove a different fuse and see if the drain is still there. This will help you determine what system is draining your battery and help you focus on that system to pin point the drain.

It is most likely a wire that has rubbed its insulation off and is coming in contact with either the frame or two or more wires that have fused together through heat or insulation being rubbed off.

Suzuki intruder 800. Dead. Started bike, ran briefly. Died. Now no power to lights, starter, nothing. I checked the fuses at the relay, checked battery charge. Its good.

When you say "the fuses at the relay", I'm taking that to mean the system fuses located behind the left crankcase cover just aft of the coolant reservior. Have you checked the main 30 amp fuse located under the saddle? There should be two 30 amp fuses under the saddle; one is a spare, the other is active. If the main fuse blows out, nothing will work.

Can a voltage regulator/rectifier if not working properly blow the main fuse. I have a 2002 v-star 1100. I was riding when all of a sudden the bike died on me. I lost all power no light, turn signals,...

YES!
Good link here:
http://www.flygenring.dk/yamaha/artikler/1100ChargingSystem.pdf

Symptoms:
Lights flickering at times and/or battery gets hot to the touch

Problem:
Reglator/Rectifier

When the regulator dies, it allows as much as 19 volts to appear across the battery. This is not good. It will cook the battery and the battery could even explode. Fuse can not stand up to this!

Accessory fuse keeps blowing, headlight not working

I know this sounds aomewhat general, however please give the following some thought:
Check your relays, if you have an aftermarket horn you may have a different relay. To troubleshoot unplug your headlight, unplug your horn, etc.. Turn your ignition switch to accessory only. See if the fuse pops. If it does unplug whatever added accessories you may have still have plugged in. Once you can get the fuse to stop popping, turn the ignition switch to on. Then one at a time plug you accessory, headlight, etc. back in. When you find what pops the fuse, unplug that item, start plugging in the other items, if the fuse has not popped you have potentially isolated the circuit causing the issue. Now check the wiring for loose connections, bad ground, and CHECK the relay if that item has one. Hope this helps,

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

To address the "...bike is dead...", initially:
  • externally charge the battery;
  • chec/replace the 30 Amps main fuse located at the starter relay;
  • to locate the starter relay, follow the big cable from the battery's + terminal;
  • if the fuse blows,. disconnect the regulator and replace the fuse to try again.

Postback results of initial tests.

Good luck and thank you for asking FixYa.

a jump box is nothing more then a battery with leads on it so where are you connecting it verses the new battery you put in the bike. that doesn't make since unless you are connecting the box right to the starter motor then it be constently running the motor untill you unhooked it. check all your fuses and examine all wire harnesses for damage, burns, or any mellting.
