Is there a primary chain on this model. if so how di I tighten
SOURCE: gas tank
I'm pretty sure it does. I own a 1995 Vulcan and I bought a 2003 tank and looked at the mounting brackets and fuel connections all looked to be the same - but don't put this in stone. I haven't been able to put it on yet because it's still out being painted. There should be no difference in the fuel tank mounts from 1996-1005, but as always, check with a professional if this information is critical.
SOURCE: loose chain
Loosen the Back Nuts on the Side of the Rear Wheel, Then use a Wrench to Turn the Bolts extending out the Rear of the Bike in Clockwise to pull the Rear Wheel Back, Thus Tacking Slack out of the Chain. Do Not over Tighten as the CHain Tightens some itself with Flex when you put Weight on it. Retighten Axle Nut. Thats it.

Your unit comes with automatic cam chain tensioners for each cylinder, sometimes they get stuck or just wear out, you can try taking it off and reinstall it, a lot of time thats all it takes. If the noise is still there then I would replace it, its just two bolts holding it on.

Assuming its the same as a 900.
loosen the 2 allen bolts at the rear of the swing arm. loosen the brake lock bolt,so the caliper can slide as well.
Turn the large cams that the axle bolts through to move the wheel back or forward., make sure the adjustment marks line up the same.
It can help to loosen the axle nut first, if you are having trouble getting the left and right adjustments the same.
dont forget to tighten everything up again and replace the axle circlip,
