Paul, I have looked on-line and get no definitive answer. One site listed the timing as "OHC". That tends to tell me that the bike probably has points. Just do this, on the left side of the cylinder head at the top, there will be a rounded rectangular cover plate held in place by two screws. Remove the plate and the points will be right in front of you along with the condenser and spark advance. I am not certain on the old Kawasaki's if the points were on the left or right side. Pretty sure it was the left.
.
There is an off chance that the points could be inside the flywheel or on the right side of the engine on the end of the crankshaft. That would be the only other location possible. I have seen so many configurations I can't keep them straight. And considering 25 years have passed. . . . .By the way, I think you may have a 1983 model sold in 1984. Write down the VIN # off the steering stem and call a dealer. They should be able to tell you exactly what year etc.. Google " vintage motorcycle parts kawasaki " and you may be able to find points and other parts. Do you know how to set the ignition timing?

Please rate this solution. Thanks!

Qot fire to the coils but not beyond was missing ignition switch

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Depending on the version, initial check would be for IGN +12 on the yellow/red wires of the ignition coils and pulsating voltage on the black & green wires when cranking.

Again depending on the versions, the white wire is the always ON +12 coming from the battery through the main fuse.

Postback how many wires to the ignition switch and results of above initial tests.

Good luck and thank you for asking FixYa.

No power installed new battery into a 2006 kawasaki ninja zx-6r636

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Initially, by your post of "...no power...", I am assuming that there is no electrical power when the ignition switch is turned on.

Almost always, 2 possibilities for a completely dead electrically:
  • loose / corroded battery terminals, connectors - clean, tighten;
  • blown 30A main fuse - replace. It would be located in the starter relay. To locate the starter relay, follow the cable from the battery's + terminal.

Good luck and thank you for asking FixYa.

Kawasaki ninja 636 won't start, removed seat and tank to replace battery. Engine turns over, but does not fire. Was started 2 months ago.

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

On your post "...does not fire..." initial checks would be for:
  • consistent IGN + 12 on the red wire going to all the ignition coils even when cranking;
  • pulsating voltage on the other wire of each ignition coil coming from the ECU when cranking.

Incidentally, if the bike has been sitting for 2 months, you may want to check quality of fuel and/or replace it. Further checks maybe required on the fuel delivery system. Try of a quick fix would be adding / spraying injector cleaner.

Good luck and thank you for asking FixYa.

Ignition light wont come on ,battery fully charged

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

A couple of initial checks:
  • loadtest the battery;
  • check, clean power terminals, connectors;
  • check, clean fuse & fuse holder in starter relay and in fuse box;
  • check, clean ground connection points to battery's - terminal, engine and chassis/frame.
Good luck and thank you for asking FixYa.

88 ninja 600r losing power to coil and tach

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Initially, check:
  • black wire from the ignition coil that goes to the CDI;
  • check the terminal/pin of the black wire at the connector before the CDI;
  • check the 4 wires from the pickup coil, their connectors and their connections to the CDI.
Good luck and thank you for asking FixYa.

1996 zx11 getting sprk to one bank only

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

The voltage on the green wire must be pulsating when cranking/starting the bike, not steady. Confirm by similarly testing the voltage on the black wire on the left ignition coil. If the green still reads a constant voltage, then the CDI is faulty; to be more specific, most likely that the switching tansistor inside the CDI that drives the right ignition coil has shorted.

Good luck and thank you for asking FixYa.

My 2000 zx9r fired when cold then stopped and then i lost all electrical power but it isnt fuses

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Assuming you have checked the 30 Amps main fuse integrated with the starter relay, then the most likely suspect would be the ignition switch. Check with a testlight presence / absence of +12 on the white wire from the starter relay to the ignition switch. From the ignition switch all wires would be carrying  +12 depending on the key position.

Good luck and thank you for asking FixYa.

2002 kawasaki ninja 250 motor on ATV need wiring help

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

To my knowledge, there would only be 3 wires needed from the handlebars that affects the engine:
  • engine RUN/OFF;
  • clutch ENGAGED;
  • engine START.
The first 2 would go to the interlock plus the neutral wire and the sidestand wire. The interlock then sends signals that starter motor can turn and that CDI can fire.

As to the ignition coil, 1 wire is IGN B+12 while the other would go to the CDI and should pulsate when cranking or engine running.

Good luck and thank you for using FixYa.
