1500cc drifter lunging after a few miles

I have a very strange problem where my Drifter will ride fine for the first few miles (between 6 and 20). Then it will start to sputter like it's misfiring. If I accelerate it sputters ever worse and lunges. It will do that even if I try to keep the accelerator constant. Eventually I am forced to pull over as it slows down more and more while trying to keep it going.

When I pull over and turn off the engine, it will not start back up for 2-10 minutes. When I am finally able to turn it over, there is a cloud of black smoke that comes out of the pipes for a moment. The bike will run fine for a few miles and start doing the same thing. Each time the distance I can go is shorter and shorter before it starts lunging again.

If I leave it overnight, the next day the process starts all over again where it will run fine for 6-20 miles.

I have taken it in to a mechanic, but he acts like I'm crazy and making it up because he can't reproduce the problem. He rides it for a mile or two and says it is fine. He even said he fixed it once, but he just replaced the spark plugs and tried to convince me it was just vapor lock. Of course, a few miles down the road the same thing happened.

Any help would be appreciated. I'm sure it is something simple, but I just don't know how to troubleshoot this problem.

Sounds like a fuel filter, replace filter, run some carb injecter cleaner through gas tank.("important" read label, most bottles are for 10 gallons, add accordingly)

2002 drifter 800. Bike starts and runs good for

Sounds like you have a fuel delivery problem. First check to see if there is a inline filter from the fuel tank to the carburators that is partially plugged. If not, you will have to remove the fuel valve from the fuel tank and clean the screens on the fuel pick-up tubes. The only other thing that would cause a fuel delivery problem would be the vacuum line from the carburators to the fuel valve has a split causing insufficient vacuum to open the fuel valve.

I am about to buy a 1998 vn 1500 kawasaki -

NO theres not. i own this very same bike i have the 99 1500 drifter #0791 last 4 of vin. the only quirk with this bike is the clutch springs. they were weak but if this bike has over around 20k miles you should be good because someone else probally has replaced them, if not its a simple quick repair. but if you have to replace them just upgrade to the mean streak spring they will fit, they are a different part number but they will fit. its an hour and a half job to replace them. i have done about 10 of these in the last few years for customers. if any further questions contact me on here and we can go over this on the phone. i am a kawasaki vulcan nut. i own 2 of these bikes one being the 1500 drifter the other a 02 800 drifter.
