I have a 2005 Road Star 1700. I complained about

I have a 2005 Road Star 1700. I complained about the feel of my front wheel wobbling when I drove over the tar filler they repaired the highway with. They said it was normal. Then I went to them due to strange uneven wear on my front tire and that the wobble was out of control. If I took my hands off the handle bars it would begin to wobble and get progressively worse to a danger level. They said it was tire wear. I bought a new tire.
I asked them to check alignment, forks and bearings. They said all checked out.
With the new tire it has not changed, if I let go of the handlebars it will begin a small wobble and get worse.
If I take corners and really lean into them, I have to fight it for control.
This is not how a $14k bike should handle and all my dealership wants to do is replace the tire. I've already done that.
My manufacturs warranty is no more but I bought an extended and want this fixed.
I am a Yamaha guy, this is my 3rd since 2004, something is wrong with this one.
Help !

Sounds like a good plan and many options. I appreciate your knowledge, suggestions and step by step.
I hope it works, do really enjoy my bike and ride, but NEED to be safe.
    Thanks.
I would rate this a top notch, 9 or 10 score on a scale of 1-10, 10 being the best.

I had the same problem when I purchased my 2005 Roadstar Silverado last spring. The bike handled very poorly in corners. My front tire also cupped. I replaced the front tire and wheel bearings with no change. I then did the "flop test" which is to check steering bearing condition or torque setting. Failed the slop test and also found play in the front end when grapping the front wheel and firmly pulling up, while the bike is supported good off the ground. Tried tightening bearings no help. So changed the steering bearings. The existing bearings where destroyed. In addition, when travelling on the highway I ovserrved my front forks where in constant motion and they also seemed very week when braking. So I rebuilt the forks with new racetech springs and 15 wt oil. The forks and the steering bearings I did at the same time so cant say they one helped more than the other but I can definitely say that both jobs needed to be completed. My bike then handled as it should and actually better then I expected from such a large bike.
I just noticed the original post was from 2009. Hopefully you have resolved your problem in the past 10 years. Kidding but hoping that someone be helped and I didnt just waste the last 10 minutes of my life typing response to a 10 year old question. Peace, ride safe, and dont forget its a very wild world out there.

I had the same issue with my 06 v-star custom. I changed the tire first because it was badly worn and even with everything else as per spec there is a great chance that a bad tire could mask other issues. It turns out that one of my front forks was lower than the other on oil. Once this was corrected there was no more issue.

Several options are available. If there is another dealer in the area go there. If not, take it in to the original dealer and tell them you want it fixed. Challenge them to ride with you with you as a passenger. Show them first hand what is going on and their obligation under contract to find and fix the fault. Be aware that they will probably try to respond " We have no control over how an owner rides his bike and the damage he may do to it while riding. As such the warranty will not cover repairs due to user neglect or damage." There is some validity to the statement. See what the warranty may say on the matter.

Okay, so the warranty doesn't cover it. What if a part were missing in the wheel assembly? In any event why can't his in house mechanic figure out what is going on? If no joy, contact the Yamaha regional manager. You can usually resolve issues that way. Alternate to that you could introduce the dealer to your two best friends> Mr. Smith and Mr. Wesson. :)

The front wheel should have a collar then an oil seal then a bearing on each side of the hub. The axle goes through the right fork, the hub, then the left fork. Bad bearings? Pull the wheel yourself and check. Any wear on the axle? Put your finger in the bearing. Does it turn freely and smoothly? Check the steering stem bearings and the torque on the stem crown nut. Any missing parts in the stem assembly? Are the forks operating properly? Check the forks for smooth, uinform and equal action. Both forks should act the same. If one is stiff and one is spongy then spook city can appear. Is the oil level the same in both forks? Has a spring in one fork collapsed? Measure the springs. Are they within factory specifications? How is the tire pressure? Are the forks mounted properly? Have they been twisted or knocked out of alignment? Is the wheel running true? I think .008 is the spec limit on the outside circumference and the same left an right. Somewhere in what I have written is your answer. If nothing else, the mechanic now has a checklist to work from.

Go to the site below where you can see a parts diagram for your specific bike. You will select the actual brand, year, model, etc., once you go to the site. Part numbers and prices are also shown. You can order parts from this site. In the event no price is shown on a particular part, the part is not in stock.

Hey Casey, check the rating > if a 9 or 10 then a top rating is due. I won't die without it but it is nice to get the top ratings. :) Thanks for the kind words.

I also have a 05 1700 Roadstar with the low speed wobble and poor handling in corners . It has never handled properly since new. Spent 5 yrs try to find problem as it was getting to the point where I wouldn't drive it anymore, cause it was getting so bad. Finally found the problem after changing wheels, tires and fork springs. The only thing wrong was the steering head bearings. They were in terrible shape. Apparently the specs for the torque is not enough for that heavy of bike. I had them checked at my dealer 2 years ago and they said they repacked the bearings and that they were good. They only packed the top bearing and obviously never looked at them and never torqued them, you could tell by looking at the locking nuts that they were done with a hammer and punch, not a socket and torque wrench. If your front wheel flops back and forth with no effort when on the jack stand it should have a "little" bit of drag, and I mean very little.New bearings and a "little" tighter fixed mine 100%

I have a 2005 road king with wire wheels. I just noticed a slight wobble in front tire. very much like when a tire tracks on pavement grooves. is this a road problem or tire/spoke problem?

If you can get the front wheel off of the ground, spin the wheel and check the tire for the wobble, check the axle for looseness, and the rim to see if it is bent.
