Spray it off at the car wash to remove all the oil , then spray Right Guard (Yes, that Right Guard) on the area of the leak. It will show up, but you may not be able to see exactly where. There are a couple spots where it can leak. The jackshaft oil seal, as you said, transmission output shaft (clutch shaft) on the trans itself, the inner primary seal where the trans shaft runs thru, the engine sprocket shaft oil seal, inner primary O-ring, the bolts that hold the inner primary to the engine/trans, the primary chaincase gasket and the drain plug. Hopefully when you get it apart, you will see which seal is leaking. If not, replace them all. Still want to fix the leak? LOL

it sounds as if your inner primary is not lined up they do have a tendency to wear slots in the holes where they mount to the tranny and motor

On some models it is possible to pull battery and get to the wire. If not i would rather pull the battery tray than dig into the primary to get the starter bolts .For fear of a leak on reassembly.

There are two parts to the charging system. The stater the thing with all the wire windings. And the magnets that are in the steel shell that fits our it. You have to check and make sure that they are not damaged in any way. If they hit anywhere it will not work.

Start at the above link. Its basically a microfiche of the harley motorcycles. You'll need to select 1996 and heritage softtail etc but you should be able to find what you want. I used a similar for my suzuki and you can print etc and better than some of the manuals!!!
To take the starter off your bike, first, you need to disconnect the cables from the battery and remove the battery. Then, drain the primary case and remove the outer primary cover. Remove the seat from the bike. Take the small bolt out that holds the starter jackshaft in and remove the jackshaft. On the early models, there is a small o-ring that you need to replace, you'll see it when the take the bolt out of the jackshaft if your bike has one. Once you have this off, go to the other side of the bike and remove part or all of the exhaust system to enable you to reach the starter. On a Softail bike, you'll have to remove the bolts and supporting rubber grommets from the oil tank. Do not take any oil lines loose. All you need to do is raise the tank just a bit to get to the rear bolt that holds the starter on. Disconnect the positive battery cable and the single small wire from the starter. Remove the two large socket head bolts that holds the starter on. When you take the starter off, there is a coupling that connects the jackshaft to the starter. Mark the direction that it goes in or the counter bored end goes towards the jackshaft. To put the starter back on, reverse these procedures.
Good Luck
